From Orkin’s 2022 list of “rattiest” cities in the United States:

4. Washington, D.C.

25. Norfolk

33. Richmond

In the list of cities with the most rodents, Chicago took the top spot, followed by Los Angeles and New York.

By counting total rat populations, Orkin’s methodology skews to big cities. I’d like to see a ranking of cities by rat-to-human ratio. — JAB

My sister had a business in Old Town Alexandria. She couldn’t put out a bird feeder as it drew rats. Must be the old levy’s and outhouses in the area.

Talk about clean out the swamp in Washington. Now it is clean out the rats! I wonder which one is worse? Death by malaria or rats carrying pathogenic fleas? See https://thehill.com/opinion/healthcare/3662944-rats-and-sewage-are-overwhelming-americas-biggest-cities/

I think the federal bureaucrats in metro Washington may indeed be worse than both the swamp and rats combined.

I used to run on the many mornings I awoke in my hotel on the Lower East Side of New York City. Down 6th St to the East River Greenway. No problem in the late Spring, Summer or early Fall. But Winter? Rats were constantly scurrying across the sidewalk from the lined up trashcans practically on top of my shoes.

I can’t believe there are as may rats anywhere as there are on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Norfolk has more seagulls than DC. DC had first choice.

The poor fellas are maligned. They are relatively clean animals and do wonders in cleaning up after humans. Hell, if they had bushier tails, people would feed ’em peanuts.

In the interest of fairness, having had pet rats, a hamster, and guinea pigs, rats are the best by a long margin. My spouse adores them. I’m leaving that so enjoy.

I’m not sure seagulls spread disease like rats do…. but some have been accused of:

Those would be black backs, if at all. But seriously, gulls attacking sheep aggressively enough to kill one? Nah, bit far fetched.
