Who Knew?

Henrico Doctors Hospital courtesy HCA

by James C. Sherlock

I just came across a fact that surprised me considering how much I have studied Virginia hospitals.

Henrico Doctors’ Hospital with 767 beds and CJW Medical Center with 758 beds, both in Richmond, rank numbers five and six in size in the entire 180-hospital empire of HCA, the largest private hospital system in America.

Together they represent HCA’s largest market presence by far.

Go Richmond.

The Henrico Doc’s campus on Parham Rd is a pleasure, if any hospital experience can be called a pleasure. It is uncrowded and efficient. The main operation at Forest & Skipwith is overcrowded, slow and a generally unpleasant experience. Together they make up the 767 beds, but the one campus is far more patient friendly than the other.

Our big hospital on the Peninsula grew like Topsy. Navigating the hallways is an Alzheimer’s test.

    2. Never thought the name made sense, however. Sounds like a place where doctors get treated.

Well, considering one is usually sick when occupying a hospital bed, “GO RICHMOND” might not be the best cheer. Perhaps just a simple “congratulations” might be better.

HCA knows a sucker when it sees one. BTW – How is that Commanders’ Summer camp deal doing?

There’s over 100k signatures on a petition to revert to Redskins as the team name. The Richmond summer camp was just another typical Snyder debacle.

I know about both. One native american group is very supportive of changing the name back. As for the summer camp in Richmond – I guess everybody needs to be burned by Snyder to learn not to deal with him. Now, that’s not a problem.

  4. There are three viable health systems in the Richmond region — VCU, Bon Secours and HCA. As you have observed in the past, that creates more competition than is found in most communities. Of course, the incentives in the healthcare industry are so perverse that competition may not have the beneficent effects we see in other industries. At the very least, though, if you dislike one system, there are two others to patronize.

Aye, ‘tis a mean thing, but mine own”. 25-bed hospital in New London, NH. The entire community runs a carnival with all proceeds donated to the hospital.
