The Woke Never Rest… Because It’s Hard to Keep Up

James Madison University already has a Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) program. Now three WGSS professors are proposing creation of an “LGBTQ” studies minor, reports The Breeze student newspaper.

The program, which must undergo a lengthy approval process, would give students “access to a quality minor that would give them insight into queer lives,” says WGSS prof Kristen Kelley.

Sounds to me like JMU has a long way to catch up.

Consider that Virginia Military Institute, a military academy for chrissake, refers to “LGBTQIA+” in its diversity, equity and inclusion program. The “I” stands for intersex, and “A” for asexual, aromantic, or agender, according to Google. Not only that, VMI adds a plus sign to cover any permutations of sexuality and gender the other letters leave out.

Why no “I,” “A” or plus sign, JMU?

I’ll admit, wokism mutates faster than cockroaches after a nuclear war, so it’s hard to keep up. But, really, a gender program with only five letters? C’mon, JMU, you’ve got to up your game!

  1. Twenty-one letters to go. But only one pronoun.

Virginian Republicans are able to confront a pressing problem, identify an optimal solution, eliminate it, and exhaustively begin trying anything else before concluding that the problem is simply a failure to understand the situation because of CRT, LBGTQ, DE&I, or some other combination of a few capital letters. All of this is, of course, remedied with a Confederate flag or statue.

The Dem solution, aka “The Northam Way” is blackface and klan robes. If they got together with the Repubs and the stars and bars it would be a bipartisan remedy, but maybe not better for the people of Virginia.

      1. Many Democrats look better covered in a sheet or a can of paint. Perhaps there should be tax credits or subsidies for this. Or for burkas and hijabs.

If sex determines gender, then biological science identifies only two genders. If gender has nothing to do with sex, the word “gender” has no meaning.

    1. LarrytheG Avatar

It’s the real world and we have trouble understanding it and describing it but it is real.

    2. Nancy Naive Avatar

SCOTUS says sex does not determine gender. What meaning do you want gender to have? Of course, you could go extreme. Is it le sex or la sex?

      1. Lefty665 Avatar

Depends on whether you’re the f*er or the f*ee.

    3. Gender identity as I understand it relies on personhood which is separate from one’s physical body. That is by definition – metaphysical.

It certainly smacks of religion to me. Additionally, it has become the state religion in many places.

The same people who have fought so hard over the years to have religion removed from schools, now insist that their beliefs and dogma be not only taught, but required.

I don’t know. Seems to me the woke had previously been asleep while the unwoke defined everything. Then conservatives discovered the injustice and they, too, became woke. Both ends of the political spectrum are now woke at the same time. A miracle.

You’re just making stuff up. As we discussed yesterday you have created an oxymoron and self identified with it, although you are mostly anaerobic. You would benefit if you paid attention to JABs above discussion of the term in response to your and Larry’s misuse of English and clean up your act.

Shucks, you spoil the fun. Why is woke conservative oxymoronic? Is the application of the term woke not itself appropriated from a usage by American blacks?

          2. Lefty665 Avatar

For the 3rd time, from JAB above: “woke” was a term the woke bestowed upon themselves, and it was not an insult to them. Conservatives picked up the term as a handy way to identify the people who… called themselves woke.

The difference between how conservatives dealt with homosexuality , then later, same-sex marriage and now, is they found some new name-calling words like “woke”.

Other than that, it’s the same folks with the same inability to deal with the real world and as it is and just deny.

    1. Randy Huffman Avatar
      Randy Huffman

To use a line from Reagan, “here you go again”. You and many others complain many Conservatives use the word Woke to name call Progressives.

How often do you push back when Progressives call conservatives racists, white supremacists, fascists, Russian assets, election deniers, accuse them of killing democracy, warmongers, extreme MAGA, misongynists, Teabagger, Trumpster, and thanks to Nancy above, puts all Virginia Republican’s in the category of remedying their issues with a statue or confederate flag.

No, many (not all) Progressive Democrats are the ones who have a problem dealing with the real world. Woke is an accurate one word description of them, and they deserve it.

      1. James McCarthy Avatar
        James McCarthy

The concept of “woke conservative” covers the notion because they are aware of injustice.

          1. James McCarthy Avatar

But Lefty cites JAB as the authority that woke was self bestowed by the woke upon the woke.

      2. LarrytheG Avatar

the name calling does go both ways but “woke” has become the de-facto standard for Conservatives these days.

The REAL WORLD is the world that exists whether we like it or not – homosexuality, transgender, kids who are abused by their parents, climate change, Covid, valid elections… etc… won’t find too many progressive in denial about these things.

Actually, the word originated in the civil rights movement among black Americans fighting for equal rights. They won with Brown v. Board of Education and CRA. This is a way for the Right to remind themselves of that and “fight back”.

For one, that’s not name-calling. It’s Conservative inclusiveness.

    2. Actually relatively conservative authors, like Andrew Sullivan, David Lampo, and Jonathan Rauch, wrote the early books arguing for gay marriage. Libertarian billionaires like Paul Singer funded the marriage equality campaign. A Republican lawyer, Ted Olson, argued the case for marriage equality before the Supreme Court. Obama and Hillary, when campaigning, said the opposed gay marriage. Far left gays (and straights) opposed gay marriage because they opposed marriage as an institution. Only after the Supreme Court decided the case to Democrat politicians jump on board in large numbers.

      1. LarrytheG Avatar

In general for mainstream types… typically Conservatives who are not gay or trans themselves are not exactly supportive and empathetic, etc… hostile and “anti”… no?

Gays have always known who was “gay” in most social settings…right?

Many liberals seem to catch on quick but Conservatives not so much.
