The Rot Runs Deep, My Friends

Sure, America has big problems but we’ll overcome them. Americans are resilient. We’ve always bounced back. So goes the optimists’ refrain that the country is not hurtling toward Boomergeddon.

But we’re not the same people we once were, my 83-year-old mother never tires of reminding me. The country has undergone a moral metamorphosis, she says…. for the worse. The rot extends deeper than out-of-control Wall Street greed-heads. It extends deeper than the wanton promiscuity of the under-class. The rot runs broad and deep. View this video footage to see appalling vacuity, insouciance and amorality that cannot be explained away by victimization or special circumstance.

This is where a half-century of moral relativism and situational ethics have gotten us. From the highlights reel:

Q. “Why did you do it?”
A. “Who doesn’t like money?”
Q. “Do you have any remorse from stealing from a nine-year-old girl?”
A. “Right now, no. I’m kind of pissed. I have charges. And we had to give the money back.”

    “We just needed the money?”

Sort of like CEOs backdating stock options.

And please, spare us the morality lectures.

We both lived through the 1960s. When I went to college, the college president told me that the 1920s were even worse.

And please, stop talking about the so-called promiscuity of the “under-class.” It sounds so racist and classist. I find it offensive. I mean, who the hell are you to start giving everyone a sermon on sex?

  2. Well, well, well… Racist and classist. I’ve never brought race into it. I don’t know what racial stereotypes you’re superimposing upon my words, but that’s your bugaboo, not mine.

I don’t care about anybody’s sexual behavior — until it affects me. When some woman has a child and feels entitled to state support, then it affects me as a taxpayer.

I’m surprised you don’t feel the same way. After all, when people smoke and get obese, and then run up the government’s health care expenditures, to your mind that’s a legitimate reason to regulate peoples’ behavior. Why is peoples’ irresponsible sexual behavior sancrosanct?

the “underclass” ? lord! (though I agree.. it sounds really, really bad!)

it’s a big world with lots of different kinds of people. Stealing, back-biting, vacuous minds, cheating, etc have been common for a long time – way back.

the only difference between the transgressions of the “under class” and the higher ups, is the higher ups often think bigger. I especially like the moralistic GOP who often end up being found out for the very thing they are pontificating their self-avowed morality about. And the GOP does not have a lock on sleaze, witness John Edwards but, in general, the level of hypocrisy is off the scale with the GOP critters. You sorta expect libtards to be sinners.. but listening to the GOP … which oddly enough often starts just like this post did…you’d think they were sitting at the right hand of GOD telling the rest of us how it is. BARF!

      LarryG’s point is valid.

I can’t, for the life of me, see a difference between the social decay in the poor (Republican) areas in Southwestern Virginia and in the (Democratic) inner cities.

      Low high school graduation rates
Out of wedlock and underage pregnancies
      High per capita welfare spending
Illegal drug use (crack vs meth)
      High unemployment

The astonishing thing is the Virginia Republicans’ ability to convince the poor in rural Virginia to vote Republican!

At least the poor in the inner cities seem to understand the actual political philosophies of the two major parties.

      1. There is no meaningful distinction between the white underclass and black underclass. See my post on Charles Murray, “America’s Growing Cultural Class Divide.” PeterG describes any talk of the underclass as racism when it’s not. The issues of dependency and self-defeating behavior know no racial bounds. Just take a look at England’s white underclass, which is even more far gone than America’s.

So, why do places like Lee County vote almost entirely for Republicans while places like Hampton City vote almost entirely Democrat?

More specifically, how do the Republicans convince anybody of limited means to vote for them?

  4. She should have said she did to prevent suburban sprawl. That passes for a reason to take other people’s money here in Fairfax County.

I ran into a young man who is in 7th grade and we were discussing how to measure distances and it became painfully apparent that he did not know the conversions – not even 3ft to a yard. He knew that a football field was 100 yards but when asked how many feet, he was stumped.

Anyone who has watched various versions of Jay Leno on the Street and FOX news similar – has to be shocked about how little a lot of people know about political leaders vs entertainers, geography, and simple math and science.

keep in mind that many of those interviewed are likely in the 75% who DID graduate from high school.

but also, to be fair, we really don’t know how many folks on the street were interviewed who actually did know facts. Hopefully the ratio of informed vs clueless is 10 to 1 or better…. we can always hope….

I still cannot get over this phrase: ” the wanton promiscuity of the under-class”

the role models for the “underclass” are who? Entertainers and Sports Figures… whose mores are, if nothing else, pretty wanton and pretty promiscuous.

Many sports figures these days – are glorified thugs…. and entertainers “promiscuous” behavior is not only sexual but includes all manner of drugs except of course when caught, they get no where near the “justice” that the “under class” receives when caught with drugs.

Did I mention body “art” metal stuck through body parts like primitive people habits and tattoos…. The wider population now reminds me of the characters seen in “Lockup Raw”….

In the meantime, skilled jobs go unfilled even as we have a ton of people borrowing their way into bankruptcy to get a degree and those same people cannot tell you who their elected representatives are or locate Iran on a map if their lives depended on it.

This is not just moral decay. This is..self-imposed ignorance as a lifestyle choice.

    Jim:

That story was from 2008. The blonde bimbo – Stephanie Woods – was dubbed “The Cookie Monster” in her hometown of Palm Beach.

But, needless to say, the story doesn’t end there.

It seems that Ms. Woods was arrested in 2010 for kidnapping and armed robbery. The Cookie Monster pleaded guilty to those charges.

So, what did the libtard judge do?

Sentenced her to “time served” and put her in a treatment program.

Oh, it just keeps getting better.

It seems that The Cookie Monster walked out on a restaurant bill between the time she stole the Girl Scout money and the time when she and her boy friend committed armed robbery and kidnapping.

Now, Ms. Monster has violated the terms of her parole.

Needless to say, the libtard court system doesn’t see any more reason to be upset by this than by any of the other transgressions. You see, Cookie has a 3.57 GPA in college where she takes challenging courses in subjects like Algebra.

    Algebra?

I took algebra in 8th grade and the more advanced class in 9th grade.

    Holy crap!

    Oh, not to fear …

Ms. Woods has finally met a no nonsense judge who will bring her to justice.

    15 days of justice.

She must have gotten out yesterday.

I’d steal Girl Scout cookies if they are Samoas. I can go through a box in three minutes, they are that good.

    1. But even you would steal only a box of cookies — not the $150 the girl scout had collected! You wouldn’t make a very good Bolshevik after all.
