The Proper Understanding of the Importance of Education

Remember the schools being shut down in Richmond for the entire academic year 2020-21 for COVID?

Remember the teachers union protestations seeking the same outcome elsewhere in Virginia?

Of course you do.

Just a note to put that in perspective.

The IDF’s Home Front Command announced yesterday that Israeli schools and educational facilities across the central region of Gush Dan (Tel Aviv) will resume operations without restrictions starting Tuesday.

Jerusalem schools will also open Tuesday.

And remember that one of the sane Democrats who pushed his colleagues hard on reopening, Sen. Chap Petersen, was punished for that sin and beaten in a primary.

Not sure what a terrorist attack in one relatively small country and a worldwide pandemic that killed millions via an airborne pathogen have in common…. maybe a better comparison would be the closure of NYC public schools in the aftermath of 9/11… any differences you would like to point out?

Btw, you know that teachers are unionized in Israel, right…?

“A terrorist attack in one relatively small country.”

Thank you for your absolutely expected perspective. You understand, of course, that it might not be shared by Israelis.

What was incorrect about what I wrote?

I offer that your perspective is not the same as those in Israel who are opening their schools.

In reference to your “better comparison” comment, I point out that NYC was not still under attack when they reopened their schools.

It is not my perspective that is relevant here. Nonetheless, given that Israeli schools were also shut down for extended periods during the Covid pandemic, it seems that Israelis also view this situation as distinctly different.

Hamas and others were not firing rockets daily into Manhattan. That might have kept schools closed. I have a feeling the decision to reopen the schools now has more to do with the Israeli leadership accepting they won’t be invading Gaza and are heading back to status quo ante. The U.S. cut the legs out from under that option. And perhaps wisely. Within days the siege may be lifted and Hamas gets its victory.

American Democrats remember 1979 and 1980 and how that hostage stalemate turned out for their party. Getting those hostages home is all they care about and Israel just has to fume and bury its dead.

        Well, there are daily bombings…

      2. “Within days the siege may be lifted and Hamas gets its victory.”

Hamas recently released two more hostages. At a rate of about two per week, they can keep this up a very long time.

The ground invasion must proceed. So says Mosab Hassan Yousef, son of a founder of Hamas who understands the danger Hamas presents to the world, not just Israel.

COV-2 comes with an air raid siren, and Iron Dome shoots down viruses.

Iron Dome did not account for subhuman monsters on drugs beheading babies.

Apparently you could not come up with
        something “cute” about that.

        Not feeling well?

A decapitated baby doesn’t know the difference between a knife made in a Gazan basement and a shard from a bomb built in America.

          There. Cute enough?

        2. Please don’t encourage “cute.” It was worse than usual.

so.. the schools that serve 800,000 kids in Gaza are opening also?

    re: pandemic

the real question is what would Conservatives do when a highly contagious disease affects virtually everyone in a country.

And if it killed a bunch of teachers.. so be it….

So more than three years ago, when I predicted everybody would indeed get COVID, and the mitigation and lockdowns were not going to stop it, Larry was the first to claim I was ignoring the science. Well, the data is everybody has now gotten exposed with the antibodies to prove it.

It was clear by summer of 2020 that the schools could and should open. Larry’s “science” starts with ignoring data, on COVID or climate. Inconvenient data is rejected….The Truth trumps any silly data….

With Larry and his friends in charge, the COVID lockdowns were just warm up for the Climate Panic to come.

      1. LarrytheG Avatar

The issue is HOW we got it and did we do something to keep from most from dying?

        THAT SCIENCE!

NOT what many Conservatives were advocating that basically everyone be guided by their own beliefs and teachers (and others) be forced to expose themselves to deadly viruses “because”.

WHen it happens again, I don’t expect much different from the same folks but enough others are rational enough to do what is necessary to protect people minimize the harm.

And yep, the same crew is unable to deal with the climate realities also.

Well, as we used to say as kids, you wanna Russian work medal or sumthin?

      3. LarrytheG Avatar

re: ” So more than three years ago, when I predicted everybody would indeed get COVID, and the mitigation and lockdowns were not going to stop it,…” geeze I’d believe you over science? lordy!

“When a highly contagious disease affects virtually everyone in the country”.

Except it did not, and for those it did affect it did not affect them the same, Larry.

Some got a version of the flu. Only old people and those with specific vulnerabilities died.

Science knew that by the fall of 2020. So did the teachers unions. So did Virginia’s Catholic schools.

The Catholic schools in Virginia were open for in-person learning at the moment the Fairfax Education Association head (and the NEA and AFT) was up there on the screen lobbying against returning to the classroom for the entire year.

By doing so teachers unions destroyed the lives of millions of children who will never achieve their potential.

If you defend that choice, so be it.

      1. Stephen Haner Avatar
        Stephen Haner

Not only does he defend it, he would repeat it! That’s the scary part.

        1. LarrytheG Avatar

geeze, ” only old and vulnerable died”…

and yeah, some Conservatives wore mask and got the SHOT even as they complained about the “overreaction”!

and kids lives “destroyed” over missing a year or so of “education” like it can never be made up.,,, someone better tell
Youngkin, he’s wasting dollars trying to do that and even worse Federal dollars!

But this is what Conservatives do these days.. they look BACK and whine their grievances to no end… rather than look ahead and promote a way forward.

          On display now.

          1. Protect the truly vulnerable, and let the rest of society function. That’s what conservatives said and did at the time, and what we are reinforcing now.

The left didn’t get it then, and apparently can’t even grasp the concept in hindsight. They say hindsight is 20/20. Not for some.

          2. LarrytheG Avatar

what was the conservative plan for identifying who the vulnerable were and how to protect them?
what did they advocate FOR? Plenty off hindsight, Conservatives were AWOL from simple realities.

          4. LarrytheG Avatar

start with the nursing homes… what was the Conservative alternative?

  4. The need for education is great, but returning to school also has other benefits. Lack of school routine and socialization will make a bad situation worse for young children. This is also something conservatives warned about.

    Israel recognizes this as well.

Returning to routine studies, either physical or online, is intended to help students “return to functioning, find strength, process events, get social reinforcement and strengthen resilience,” the ministry said.
