Republican Rock Star Campaigns with Kiggans

An enthusiastic, overflow crowd crammed into a ballroom at the Marriott Oceanfront on 42nd Street Sunday afternoon to kick off Rep. Jen Kiggans’ re-election campaign. I’m not good at crowd estimates – plus I’m short and didn’t have a good vantage point – but there had to be 500 or more people in the room.

Present was a who’s who of GOP Virginia politicians from former Governors George Allen – who introduced Kiggans – and Bob McDonnell to Attorney General Jason Miyares, former members of Congress Thelma Drake and Randy Forbes and former Del. Glenn Davis, who resigned his seat in the General Assembly to become Director of the Virginia’s Department  of Energy, Del. Barry Knight and Sen.-elect Danny Diggs.

Kiggans ticked off an impressive litany of bills passed by the slim Republican majority in the House, including one that would have stemmed the flow of immigrants entering the country illegally.

“We used to call it a crisis on our Southern border,” Kiggans said, “Now we call it a catastrophe.”

Kiggans noted that the 2nd District seat was one of just six that the GOP managed to flip in 2022 to take control of the House. The Democrats desperately want to flip her seat back into the D column next year and have been running negative ads against Kiggans since last summer. The congresswoman said she hates the “lies” that are told about her, but is willing to take the abuse to continue serving the 2nd District.

The rock star of the show was New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, who gained national attention – and bipartisan support – last month when she masterfully eviscerated the presidents of the University of Pennsylvania, MIT and her own alma mater, Harvard University, before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

The trio of academics refused to say that calling for genocide of Jews by students on their campuses violated their schools’ codes of conduct on harassment and bullying. Instead they began jabbering away in meaningless legalese.

What resulted from Stefanik’s questioning was a stunning display of cowardice and moral equivalency by the three academic stooges.

Penn President Liz Magill resigned in disgrace almost immediately after the hearing and Harvard President Claudine Gay finally resigned last week after she was accused of more than 50 instances of plagiarism.

“Two down, one to go,” Stefanik quipped to the cheering crowd.

Stefanik worked to help get Kiggans elected in 2022 and said Sunday that the 2nd District is considered key to the GOP’s efforts to retain control of the House and enlarge its majority.

The New Yorker congratulated Virginians on being the first to embrace the parents’ rights movement that is gaining momentum around the country.

“Right here in Virginia is where the parents’ rights movement started,” she said, drawing a loud sustained ovation from the crowd.

Did Stefanik and Kiggans talk about the Jan. 6 “hostages”?

  2. Shoot.

I thought maybe Ted Nugent had showed up…

Might as well have…their ideas and fan bases substantially overlap. She, too, is an insurrection apologist.

I have little sympathy for the fat cat heads of Ivy League universities. It is worth noting that they all began their testimony with strong statements against anti-semitism. Those did not make the media like Stefanik’s grandstanding and demogoguing did.

“Instead they began jabbering away in meaningless legalese.” That meaningless legalese is also known as the 1st Amendment and is the foundation of our free nation. It does not just apply to speech you or I like. We might all be cautious about embracing emotional appeals to abridge speech.

Stefanik isn’t a good proxy in the 2nd district. The district is basically 50/50 and Stefanik is an extremist.

I don’t believe Kiggans is an extremist, she says some of the right things privately, but she sure votes with the zealots. She publicly supported the Tuberville promotion blockade, until the district got in her ear, and hasn’t expressed any willingness to maintain the Pentagon policy guaranteeing female service members and military dependents access to quality healthcare, despite knowing what military-affiliated women are experiencing in TX and FL and ID. I have questions. I feel like she’s a fence straddler and I’m not sure how well that will play given the Rs extremist approach to women’s lives and healthcare.

I wanted to go back and confirm before I said it but in recent V-P opinion pieces and letters to the editor, her support was in Richmond and SWVA, not her district. Speaking of folks putting their names on things…

      That makes her an extremist.

I wouldn’t trust her with my life or that of my daughters or friends but she says just enough that the ignorant may be swayed by her ‘moderation’. She’s not a vocal bomb-thrower like Greene, just a friend of that nice lady who participated in a coup, a go-along get-along squish. In the 2nd, that might be just enough plausible deniability to win. I hope the race gets the national money and attention it deserves. There’s definite vulnerability.

The House republicans are truly a do nothing caucus.
Has Kiggans revealed whether she believes that the 2020 election was honest or is she part of the it was stolen crowd. Having Stefnanik as her “rock star” supporter is not a good sign.

Her vote for Speaker Johnson was, also, not a good look. He was part of the insurrection, has repeatedly demonized the military, and supports restrictions on women’s healthcare access.

If there’s one thing I know, it’s that Rep. Kiggans doesn’t want a fight over her support for Tuberville’s holds, military cuts, and women’s healthcare against a female SWO. Helo life vs SWO? Hampton Roads knows the difference.
