Oh… My… God…

That’s my reaction to the news that Pat Robertson, chairman of the Christian Broadcasting Network, is a potential bidder for the Virginian-Pilot newspaper, which the Batten family has put up for sale. According to an Associated Press story:

“Although the price for The Weather Channel is a little rich for my blood, I am considering a potential bid for The Pilot and have asked my attorneys to look into it,” Robertson said in an e-mail statement provided Friday by his assistant, G.G. Conklin.

Jim: You’re an atheist. Are you invoking a deity you know? Is this a generic cry of thanksgiving or fear?

I’m smiling. If Robertson buys the Pilot I’ll be laughing for a long time. The political theater of Liberal outrage will be just so much fun to watch.

This Liberal isn’t outraged just yet as it is beyond the pale of reason that the Batten family would take leave of their senses and allow Elmer Gantry to control the venerable Pilot (I am a proud former staffer).

The likes of Bowden are going to have to get their kicks elsewhere. By the way, JAB, what about those funny deals with African dictators and diamond mines? Or is that a “Liberal” plot, too?

    Praise Jesus!

Peter Galuszka: Don’t presume too much. I agree with Robertson’s theology, but not all of his politics. I’ve disagree with him on local, state and national issues.

Local folks know that Robertson is out and about for the Robertson family empire and wealth.

I will get kicks listening to people scream if Robertson buys the paper. You are correct about that. It’s a spectator sport.

If Robertson does somehow acquire the Pilot, I want ringside seats to watch what follows. Talk about a circus — it would be the greatest show on earth!
