Note to Readers: Changes Coming to Comments

As part of our slow-motion overhaul of Bacon’s Rebellion, we are shifting to a new platform, Disqus, for posting comments. It will be a bit of a pain for regular participants — you’ll have to re-register — but the change-over will give us more editorial control.

Bacon’s Rebellion has some of the sharpest, most informative dialogue of any blog or website in Virginia. We love the way readers engage in debate and expand upon our posts by providing links, photos, graphs, and maps. Now we hope to raise the bar even higher. Our immediate goal is to improve the reader experience by quickly dousing the flame wars that occasionally break out. Also, Disqus has cool features that we expect to experiment with. As always, we will be attentive to feedback from our readers.

I will be announcing other exciting changes soon.

Flame wars? No James. This place is like a tea parlor in Knightsbridge compared to most. Although, I feel compelled to note that what few sparks there are seems to be between named users.

  3. I may have a DISQUS login…if so I make you guess who I am, because it is not the same name…I was not thinking DISQUS was used too much, but it still seems to be out there

    1. Oh yeah I still seem to be active on DISQUS…wish I could keep my monsterous icon…but I have another icon over there

  5. Thanks Jim. I have Disqus and I’d be happy with that because I’ve never been able to really work well with this system.

Bray School for slave and free black children 1760

Where’s that Whitehead guy? He might enjoy this. There is an annoying overlay mid page that makes reading difficult for a paragraph or two…

Cool, there’s a break in the new comment system

So, go to the home page and look at past posts, and all the comments seem to be gone. All that work lost to posterity….I wonder how this “sort by best” function is going to work.

  10. The past comments are only temporarily lost. Bacon’s Rebellion has logged hundreds of thousands of comments over the years, and importing such a massive volume created some technical issues. JP is still working on it.

Maybe I need to set something, but I no longer get pinged on my phone as the hair on fire crowd posts comment after comment on my energy article. I can feel my BP is lower….Maybe that’s the key, I post, answer a few of the first comments (esp if they are legit questions) and then ignore….

Sounds like that pigeon and my car…

BTW, “Recent Comments” appears to be working, albeit with about a 1-hour lag. Combined with “Sort by Newest”, one should be able to snark back in a timely fashion.
