The Commonwealth is home to another NCAA  basketball champion. The Randolph-Macon (Ashland) Yellow Jackets won the Division III championship yesterday.

Most sports fans in the state will be unaware of this accomplishment. Of the major media outlets, only the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Roanoke Times covered it.

It wasn’t even close. 75 to 45. Long time rival Hampden Sydney will be keyed up to knock off the Yellow Jackets next year. RMC probably would have won last year if the tournament had been held.

Hey, I was quite a pathetic sportswriter in my day, but this gets an F-. More than this, please….but then you didn’t see the game either, did you? Probably more fun to watch than Richmond getting thrashed…

Did cause me to look up Elmhurst University in Elmhurst, Ill. Reinhold Niebuhr is a grad! That’s cool.

My sportswriting skills and experience are beyond pathetic. That is why I provided links. And, yes, it would have been much more fun than watching the Spiders get smushed. But, the Spiders did make it to the second round, which is more than any of the other teams in the tournament, including Va. Tech, can claim.

I watched Longwood for awhile. Can’t remember who they were… Tennessee … and they were close when I had to leave.

  6. Congratulations to the Randolph-Macon men’s basketball team.
