Gubernatorial hopeful Tim Kaine spoke to Boys State participants at Liberty University yesterday, the day after Jerry Kilgore. Kaine apparently concentrated on education issues, but it was interesting that he spoke of Linwood Holton’s political career–Holton, the ultimate nominal Republican’s Republican, is his father-in-law.

There are plenty of Republicans like Lynwood left out there…they’re not all religiously attached to tax cuts and fighting the homosexual agenda
-
Funny thing is, Paul, they too often support Democrats. I don’t know why they don’t take the next logical step, which is to change their party id.

Will, it’s the distinction between a political party as the vessel for a set of ideas, and a political party as an instrument to obtain and maintain political power. There are plenty who criticize the “ideology first” wing of the GOP, for example (of which I am an unabashed member), and those who want to blur the differences between the parties. It’s hard to criticize Linwood Holton as such, since he was a Republican in Virginia when being a Republican wasn’t cool. There are some around these days who can’t be attributed with the same courage.
‘Course, have you noticed that there are a lot of people who claim to be “Republicans” who attack the GOP and its principles (mostly anonymously) on a fairly regular basis, while there aren’t too many Democrats who maintain their Democrat credentials while doing likewise (Zell Miller being the exception, which he’s explained)?

Holton was a Republican before the realignment, back when the Virginia Dems were just as conservative as the Republican party is today. Holton is a Dem today, whether he says so or not, not because of a change in his own ideals, but as a result of the realginment of the parties.
As to the origional content of this post, I’m surprised that they let Kaine speak in the first place. When I was there years ago, I don’t remember a single Democrat speaker.

Is it still at Liberty University?
What a joke that place is…they don’t let people go on dates without a chaperone…

I sort of liked it. the chaperone requirement was a great way to meet older women. some of them are rather needy.
