Just Wondering

U.S. Rep. George Santos (R-NY) Photo credit: NBC News

by Dick Hall-Sizemore

Four Republican Congressmen from Virginia, Wittman (1st District), Good (5th District),  Cline (6th District), and  Griffith (9th Distict), recently voted against the continuing resolution, introduced by the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives, to fund the government.  In effect, they would have shut down the government.

I wonder how they will vote. when they come back from the Thanksgiving recess, on the resolution to expel Rep. George Santos (R-NY) following the release of a unanimous, scathing report by the bipartisan Ethics Committee recommending that he be expelled.

Rob Wittman has transformed himself from a principled, conservative Republican into an unprincipled cultist .
    What a shame!

Those four voted that way a symbolic gesture. Perhaps there is concern over this?

We all know they will kick the can down the road after Thanksgiving. Why not? It’s not their money.
As for Santos. Sure, expel him. But that is unlikely as well. Only 5 members of the House have ever been expelled. All Democrats. Wouldn’t hurt to add a red team member. Need to be inclusive.

I agree that the increasing national debt is concerning. However, it is hard for the Republicans to have much credibility on this subject when the debt increased $7.8 trillion under Trump, the man they follow. And much of that increase was before the pandemic occurred. That was the third highest increase, relative to the size of the economy, of any Presidesidential administration. https://www.propublica.org/article/national-debt-trump

Trump did not do a lot to reduce deficits, I agree with that, but you know darn well spiraling spending occurred during prior administrations that carried over into his Presidency, then COVID contributed significantly to this amount.

I don’t have my normal source handy but the one site I am looking at had 2019 at $984 Billion and 2020 $3.132 Trillion. I don’t have any idea where this $7.8 Trillion number comes from unless it picks up some or all of fiscal 2021, and if it does, then that’s two years of COVID.

We also need to look at who runs Congress, not just President.

Burden of debt accumulated under Clinton, Obama, and Uncle Joe:
        $11,502,934,200,000
        Burden of debt accumulated under
GHW Bush, Baby Bush, and the Don:
        $13,729,425,100,000

Pick your brand. It does not matter, and they don’t care. We’ve been had by both teams.

We need more Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. They reduced the national debt by 5 trillion dollars. What a roaring good time that was!

I will go with Clinton. He ended up with a budget surplus. https://www.businessinsider.com/how-clinton-surplus-became-a-6t-deficit-2013-1

for those truly interested in deficit and debt, know that the Trump Tax cuts currently add to the deficits.

cutting spending to fix this will be a real trick since about 75% of the current budget is Defense, health care (like Medicare/Medicaid) and interest.

It’s not really a spending problem as much as it is that taxes have been cut too low to fund a normal, typical budget.

And the burn-it-all-down folkls could care less because what they want is “attention” by threatening mayhem – they have NO PATH to a balanced budget at all… and they know it.

A strong .com economy and a Newt Gingrich leash produced a compromising and fiscally tight Clinton.

Could be worse. There’s a Nixon Park in PA, but it isn’t until you reach the gate that it says “Richard M.” The road signs just say Nixon.

Was there some reason for these particular unrelated votes together? I think it is a generally good idea to have visibility, transparency, and accountability on all votes by all elected officials.

Oh my…the world will end if THE GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOWN!!! HORRORS!!!
What a joke. No budget for 30 years? $33 trillion of debt, and we have what to show for it? Interest will hit $1 trillion annually. Why do they get paid?
I’m pleasantly surprised Wittman voted against the resolution. Must have been getting calls from the Normies.
Meanwhile, I’ll look for purity in party voting when the Dems vote honestly on their own criminals. It’s disgusting.

      No SocSec check for you!

I know where $8T of the debt came from and where it went.

Classic “cover” vote. They knew it would pass, the leadership gave them permission to appease their constituents. Happens all the time.

Given that these 4 Congressional Districts are the most Conservative of the 5 Republican districts in Virginia, apparently they are simply representing their constituents in voting to shutdown the federal government. I’m surprised it is not a central piece of the Republican Party platform these days.

Republicans have run on shutting it down since Reagan. It’s scorpions and turtles now. As for Santos? Well, if they expelled him then they could claim that they’re draining the swamp.

Never in the course of human events have so few done so little for so many.
