Jeanine’s Memes

From The Bull Elephant

I don’t normally comment on memes, but this one provides a jumping off point to ask, what the hell were they thinking when they picked that name? Half the country is sick and tired of the self-righteous edicts, diktats and decrees  emanating from Washington, D.C. — and the Washington football team names itself the Commanders? As in.. those who issue commands… Basically, the team is signaling that it stands with the ruling political class over us taxpaying helots and hoi polloi.

After getting smacked around for the “Redskins” name, maybe owner Dan Snyder decided, if you can’t fight ’em, join ’em. Time to suck up to the ruling class.

The Commanders might appeal to the self-image of self-important Washingtonians, but the name is pretty well guaranteed to make his football team the one the rest of the country loves to hate.

Couldn’t agree more. Maybe it should be the Commandoes. The peoples team sound a little communist?

We’re not talking about Bill Clinton here.

Oh, wait, I see. You were speaking of the football team, not a particular manner of dress.

    2. VaNavVet Avatar

It appears that Commanders was more generic.

“Half the country is sick and tired of the self-righteous edicts, diktats and decrees emanating from Washington, D.C….”

The other half couldn’t care less about football…

“… pretty well guaranteed to make his football team the one the rest of the country loves to hate.”

And this is different, how exactly?

The team formerly known as the ‘Skins asked for suggestions several years ago. I suggested “Metros.” I didn’t hear back.

Yes Commanders was preferred by the fans that responded who are not as woke as JAB.

So even when you were corrected on the term you continue to misuse it.

Plus you’re an old white dude, cut the Sh*t.

JAB is all wet and woke on this one. The announcement said that it was a nod to the presence of the military and particularly the Navy in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia area. Always looking for a conspiracy theory and never able to take anything at face value is a sad way to live. Why not try and support the military as the “Capt” hopefully would.

Could’ve use the Commodores, but then there may have been rights issues with MoTown,

    2. No conspiracy theories here. The team may have cited the Navy as the inspiration for the name, but that’s not how it’s going to be interpreted.

Look, I know about Navy commanders. My dad was a Navy commander… and commander (skipper) of a submarine (although his rank was lieutenant commander at the time). But there are plenty of ranks above commander — captains, admirals, etc. To outsiders, commander is the most obscure rank in the Navy.

Moreover, D.C. is not known as a Navy town. Norfolk is, but D.C. isn’t. D.C. is known as the center of government, the center of power. Most people will view the name in that light.

      1. VaNavVet Avatar

As you noted it is not necessarily about rank, but perhaps about submarine commanders, task force commanders, group commanders, and the like all of which the public is aware of from movies, TV and books. As for a military presence, the DC area has:
        Fort Belvoir
        Andrews AFB
        The Pentagon
        Washington Navy Yard
        Coast Guard training command, Alexandria
        Army Corps of Engineers Center

No other branch has a rank of Commander. That’s more moving the goal posts.

The Coast Guard has the rank of Commander.

“Thanks for the info” doesn’t sound anything like “Oops, I was wrong”, especially with moving the goal posts to Cape May.

Your Mrs. must’ve been thrilled to meet her Mr. Right until she realized his first name was “Always”.

Again, I admitted my error. Also, again something you cannot or ever do. Mention Cape May wasn’t a goal post shift, but alas you don’t know what shifting goal posts is, as again when you get corrected you do that.

Thanks again for proving my point, about personally attacking people.

So why would DC have to become Cape May for USCG CMDR to be a COmmander as in the Washington Commanders?

About 30 years ago, some Coasties showed up at the yard in one of those really sweet 35′ aluminum hulled boats asking to get lifted out to change the knotmeter.

The yard owner said, “Give me the new one. Meet me in the shed and we’ll talk about it.”

Two minutes later he walked in handed them the old knotmeter and said, “It’s only scary the first time,” and handed them the old knotmeter.

You just unscrew them, pull them out, and swap them. In the meantime water gushes in like mad, but it would take e hours to sink.

You’re correct. It’s not Star Trek. It’s something far less meaningful; it’s football.

How about the Stars? As in D.C. if it doesn’t have stars it’s invisible.

The initials WC suggest the water closets or commodes, what they might be called as long as their record is in the toilet.

I still think they missed it two years ago when it was not Washington Team Football, aka the WTFs.

IF Snyder, who by the way made his fortune in Marketing, wanted to honor the Navy, he’d have chosen Admirals who are above Commanders. This marketing genius’ choice is being widely panned. He took two years and that is the best he could do?

      1. Admirals is already being used by an East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) team based in Norfolk.

That IS the ruling class… no room at the trough. The Washington Oligarchs would have been too obvious, I suppose.

      1. My preferred name is the Washington Weasels.

When well healed guests are basking in the Commanders Club at the new RFK Stadium, children are enjoying their Commanders Kid Club Coloring Books and fans avoid skin cancer by wearing Commanders Caps (hope I get a cut for these ideas), all will be forgiven. Of course an NFC “Best of the Least in the East” title and playoff bye would hasten that outcome.
