Me below when I hear today’s Progressive Left (e.g., The Squad or UVA faculty who condemn Thomas Jefferson) judging historical leaders by their self-imposed 2024 mores and not in the context of their times.

Where Conservatives want to take our country…

If I’m not mistaken, Richmond’s mayoral elections require the winning candidate to have won a majority of the city’s wards. It was seen as a more equitable process so the voting majority (in Richmond’s case, the White population), didn’t dilute the voice of the minority (Black) population. I’m curious about your thoughts on that process–or other equitable electoral processes–if you’re opposed to the Texas proposal.

The basis of the Texas proposal is to ensure that a minority of rural voters control the statewide offices. There is a very big difference between a city ward system and statewide county system. I would think most people would agree that the candidate that gets the most votes should hold statewide office. This system is specifically designed to skirt that concept. Richmond’s system (which includes a runoff process as well) is not.
