  1. Kids aren’t familiar with technology that has been rapidly rendered obsolete? Oh ho ho, now’s the chance to blame things I hate.

      Don’t bother. They’re obsolete… and deaf.

      1. An automatic mechanical watch needs no batteries or recharging – ever. And if necessary you can use an analog watch as a rudimentary compass.

I think digital is great – except for watches and clocks.

        1. And nearly every person has a small computer that can act as a digital pocketwatch when they need it.

          1. And when the battery dies?

            Or the screen breaks…

I keep a landline around just so I have a backup in case my cellphone breaks or dies.

is it digital with a battery backup? 😉

I have the cable modem from which the landline originates plugged into a UPS, and it also has an internal battery backup. I also have a corded phone or two plugged into it.

            Ditto.

          7. Phones have all-day batteries, but if you want to talk fringe situations you can easily ask any nearby person with a pocket computer for the time.

Or buy a digital watch which lasts extremely log on a battery. Heck, I have an Apple Watch and even when the battery is low it’ll last a good long while when placed into power conservation mode where it can ONLY tell time.

          8. You enjoy your digital watches and clocks and I will enjoy my mechanical wristwatches and clocks.

Nothing sexier than a pocket watch. Just can’t be digital. Can’t be.

Analog multimeters are also still useful. They can show you a glitch that a digital display can’t.

          1. Excellent point.

Analog are required by the FRA for specific tests. Can’t watch a coded track circuit with a digital nor can you check for grounds.

Eric the half a Troll and Rosie, how about the other half of the meme? Are you all for gender philosophy for elementary school kids?

    1. Gender is the other quarter, as you seemed to have forgotten the other portion of the dangers of white supremacy. Or maybe it’s a given that kids should be aware of that danger, and not the less charitable assumption.

But sure, I am all for teaching kids about gender identity and what it is to be transgender. In the rare chance they suffer from those issues, then they have the tools to identity such and understand themselves better to get the proper help. In the more common situation where they do not have these problems, then they will be more understanding of transgender people and less likely to bully any trans students they may encounter while growing up.

A commonsense, reasonable thing to do unlike what some on the right seem to want, i.e. inflict pain and suffering on those who have those issues.

Yes, those things (like the acceptance of others/oneself and that there are real bad people in our world) are far more important to learn than how to read an obsolete instrument. What next – all high schoolers must learn stick shift in driver’s ed or they are “woke”…?

      1. I am willing to tolerate, and even accept, people who do not know how to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission, even though such a lack of skill is considered blasphemous under the tenets of my religion.

In the old days, we used to limit such people to driving diesel Chevettes until they learned “the art of the shift” but times have changed and we are trying to be more open-minded.

Learning stick shift in driver’s ed might make carjackers better at their job:

        1. Maybe the victim should have shot the carjacker in the left leg – the guy obviously doesn’t know how to use it so he doesn’t really need it anyway, right? 😉

The 5-speed manual transmission in my car is a much better theft deterrent than any car alarm.

  6. I was born in 1944 and reared in SW MS, on the LA border. My grandfather had a small grocery store in MS and 10 miles across the line in LA he had a big old-fashioned country general store and a cotton gin.

My family moved to East TN in 1952 for my father’s job but we returned to MS for the summer every year. I worked mainly in the gin but also in both stores.

The summer of 1961 was my last summer in MS/LA. Late one August as we were ginning cotton, I counted the vehicles lined up at the gin, loaded with raw cotton ready to be ginned. 60% of the vehicles were wagons drawn by mules, 40% were pickup trucks.

In the general store we sold hubs, spokes, and wheels for wooden wagons.

So Jeanine thinks every WalMart should sell wooden spokes, hubs, and wagon wheels? And we should teach our kids the difference between “Gee!” and “Haw!”? Not surprising given Jeanine’s record of nonsense and fundamental ignorance.
