Hira Azher, the fourth-year student who posted a large “FUCK UVA” sign on the door of her Lawn residence last year, may have graduated, and the University of Virginia may have implemented measures to ensure that messages and displays on Lawn doors comported with the dignity of the Lawn and Rotunda as a World Heritage site, but the “FUCK UVA” sentiment is alive and well. Hector Terrazas Valencia, resident of room 49, has painted the words, “FUCK UVA !!! (respectfully)” on a panel of his door.

To prevent the ugly proliferation of leaflets and profanely expressed political sentiments in an architectural gem that attracts many visitors, UVa officials are requiring Lawn residents to confine their verbiage to message boards fitting in the door panels.

    Succinct.
A little less long-winded than some BR articles on the administration of same subject school.

    Looks much better…
If you are going to give honor to people who hate the school…
But remember, UVA unequivocally supports free speech (except when you try to FOIA it).

Maybe we should do as advised. Happy to help identify the state budget line items sprinkled around that could be eliminated to do unto UVA what that young leader suggests.

      1. Publius Avatar

There is WAAAAAY too much money floating around all of the Universities and UVA is one of the worst.
There should be a BR article on how science! has been corrupted by chasing the crowd and the confirmation bias of the grants…
Big foundation believes in global warming. Aspiring academic/politico to be applies for a grant and “finds” things affirming what the foundation wants. But replicating the results…weeeeelllll…
UVA needs to get out of the creating citizen leader biz and back to teaching expertise in a real subject and teaching how to critically think…

I’m all for cutting the budgets…might lower tuition for the people who are supposed to be the customers…

Nope, cutting the budgets will only result in higher tuition. The higher ed institutions have shown that they will make up reduced appropriations by raising tuition and fees.

            Dick,
Given the size of the endowment and the 5⭐️ rating of their investment management, they could replace the entire State contribution as easily as you replace a lightbulb.

Maybe they could, but they don’t. They raise tuition.

6% of the operating budget in its entirety. Better find some really big items because you could cut the whole damned thing and they could replace it with 0.5% of the endowment.

Was a time the State could threaten to take their ball and go home, but it ain’t their ball anymore. I think the game can continue nicely without the batboy.

You guys created this monster when you said they should be self sufficient.

        1. UVA should purchase “the Grounds” from the Commonwealth and just go ahead and become a private school.

I doubt the State would give a fair price. Plus, it may be that the State is legally precluded from selling the school property. Depends on how it came into their possession.

          2. Yeah, I know, but I can dream can’t I?

Or maybe the Commonwealth can evict them? 😈

Ooh, I like it! Then Youngkin can turn it into a factory filled with all those good paying manufacturing jobs.

Yes. Yet another reminder that you do not have “free speech” right anywhere and anytime you think!

Where are the free speech defenders that always bleat in BR?

    1. Free speech doesn’t entitle anyone to vandalize another’s property. Not that there’s much enforcement of https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title18.2/chapter5/section18.2-137/

      1. LarrytheG Avatar
        LarrytheG

Agree. I presume UVA has rules about that but the bigger point for me is that you cannot post anything anywhere anc claim it’s your “free speech right”.

There are “rules” for free speech as well as vandalism… 😉

You mean like YAF’s graffiti on Beta Bridge?

        1. Wahoo'74 Avatar
          Wahoo’74

They merely painted support for Justice Barrett after she was confirmed along with an American flag. Woke students immediately painted right over it.

YAF’s mural was respectful support, not “graffiti.”

It seems that this would violate the new rules. UVa. should require the message to be removed or remove the resident.

Free speech?? On a college campus today?

Does any commenter here really think that still exists?

    Disgusting.

  8. It looks to me like the message is written on a “message board” attached to a door panel (note the small nails).

Since it is not written directly on the door panel itself, I think the message meets the new requirements.

    1. Nancy Naive Avatar
      Nancy Naive

So ya can’t write on the door, but nailing something to it is okay?

      BTW, I like such get-arounds.

      1. There is a similar board tacked to the adjacent door panel. Perhaps the school put them there to serve as the “message boards” mentioned in the policy.

    2. Wahoo'74 Avatar
      Wahoo’74

      WayneS,

That’s precisely the issue. The new rules are absurd. “FU” is OK on a small bulletin board, just not on a large poster on the door.

      Huh?

This assumes…..what? People cannot read the smaller print? How is this “honoring the traditions of the University and the Lawn” as every prospective 3rd year Lawn applicant pledges his or her honor to do when they sign and agree to the Lawn Room application?

      1. How is this “honoring the traditions of the University and the Lawn”..?

For the record, I made no value judgement regarding the message’s conformance to the traditions of UVA.

I merely stated that the student’s message appears [to me] to meet the school’s new standards regarding the posting of messages on “the Lawn”.

  9. Wahoo'74 Avatar
    Wahoo’74

If the Administration and BOV do not remove this screed immediately, copy cat social justice warriors in other Lawn rooms will paint similar crass accusatory messages on the other message boards. This exact same thing happened last September when Hira Azher was allowed to “express her First Amendment Rights” on her 36 East Lawn room door. Six other “FU” signs popped up on other Lawn room doors.

I would remind everyone on this post that if an overly enthusiastic young Wahoo held up a hand painted “F Duke” sign at JPJ or “F Virginia Tech” at Scott Stadium during a game, they and the sign would be immediately removed. How does any logical enforcement of inappropriate language in the public domain on Grounds exempt Hector Terrazas from similar censure?

Can someone stand outside the gates to UVA on non UVA property and hold up a sign that says F*CK UVA? Can they then step inside the gate with that sign if they are also a student?

So, you go to UVA and UVA grants you the plum privilege of a lawn residence and you daube “Fuck UVA” on your door. Am I the only one who sees a disconnect here?
