Is U.Va. Possessed by the Devil?

Over the past weeks there’s been plenty of blogging about Rolling Stone’s coverage of the University of Virginia and lots of comment by two conservatives who believe there is an evil “hook up” culture that involves casual sex and today’s loss of morality.

Well, I’ve been feeling sort of down recently (maybe post holiday-related), so to cheer myself up, I got an old paperback copy of William Peter Blatty’s “The Exorcist.”

Imagine what I found! The “hook-up” culture has been around for centuries and may involve possession by the Devil!

Consider this passage:

“The nuns at the convent at Lille. Possessed. In early-seventeenth-century France. They’d confessed to their exorcists that while helpless in the state of possession, they had regularly attended Satanic orgies; had regularly varied their erotic fare; Mondays and Tuesdays, heterosexual copulation; Thursdays, sodomy, fellatio and cunnilingus, with homosexual partners; Saturday, bestiality with domestic animals and dragons. And dragons! The Jesuit shook his head.”

So that might be the problem — and the solution — up in Charlottesville. I suggest we send busloads of Jesuit priests to do what is necessary.

Jim Bacon and Reed Fawell could ride in the first bus.

    Good LORD! Peter. You surely are going to be “reported”..

    I’m not sure who people who make such blasphemous pronouncements are reported to these days but I’m quite sure there are one or two among us who do and you’re sure to hear from the “authorities” soon on your impertinent and unsettling observations.

    I pray for you Peter!

    Perhaps it is a hang over from being the last university in Virginia to admit women…except for parties. VT while having a women’s division called “Radford College a Division of VPI” admitted some women (girls) to the main, Blacksburg, campus decades before UVA became coed.
    Perhaps with no women on campus when some did come for parties the activities were intensified by “Its now nor never” emotions.
    VPI had a special dorm for women in a separate and discinct section of campus. It was called “The Skirt Barn” and frequently parties would end up out in front of the Skirt Barn singing while coeds waved pink things out the windows.
    Nothing like that was available in C’Ville and so they went down another path…parties in Frat Houses no worshiping a Skirt Barn.
    And tradition is tradition or something like that…who knows for sure.

      UVA wasn’t the last university in Virginia to admit women.

      It’s been co-ed since 1970.

          VMI is the last state school, Randolph Macon Woman’s College went co-ed and changed it’s name to Randolph College in July 2007.

            So Randolph Macon Women’s College is a university? A state university? And is VMI a university? No wonder there is so muuch confusion. UVA was the last Virginia university to go coed…peroid.

          Hampden-Sydney is still all-male, and Washington and Lee didn’t admit female undergraduates until 1985.

    If you’ve ever been to M Street on a Saturday night you’d understand why the Catholic Church sends exorcists to Georgetown. And long before the emergence of houses like Tappa Kegga Bud came into existence the Romans were known to throw quite the party. The first thing you see when you visit Pompeii are the ruins of a house of ill repute with life-like, detailed and graphic depictions of couples engaged in a variety of sex acts on the walls. It seems the internet did not invent pornography.

      no.. it’s a HUMAN “invention” and obviously over time and cultures – different views as to what it is – and is not!

      and gross stupidity –

      of course the “hook-up” culture in some Middle Eastern countries where women are forced to wear veils and suffer other anti-women rules – each “hook-up” would result in one more dead woman… eh?

      we’ve become much more civilized .. we only say that women “deserve” what happens to them .. now… when they dress “wrong”.. drink.. and not notice when guys are looking at them weird…

        Why do you keep confusing hook ups with rape? Forcible rape in the United States peaked in 1994 and has dropped steadily since then. In 2013 the number of forcible rapes per 100,000 was at the lowest level since 1973. According to you hook up culture theorists that should not be the trend.

          confusion here.

          I think the “hook-up” culture is a made-up mostly-American concept to excuse/justify people’s sexual behaviors … good, bad and ugly and all in between including some “encouraged” behavior of the unwilling.

      but McAuliffe is proposing LESS SOL testing and the discussion underway in some circles is how to best measure – and high stakes SOL-type testing is losing favor to more informal assessments .. where the child may not even know they’re are being assessed.. nor that he is going to be provided help for the areas where the assessments indicate a need.

      it’s a good subject – worthy of discussion and hopefully on the merits and not ideology.

      another Blog item might be the fact reported in the RTD today that enrollment is falling at some of the major universities in Va.

    Also want to point out that the Charlottesville PD just said there is “no substantive basis” for the Rolling Stone “Jackie” allegations….so hopefully, this will be the last blog post about it. The story was already destroyed by the media. Now law enforcement has come to the same conclusion.

      Does that mean no basis whatever? Totally made up out of thin air? That’s an ever bigger story! Like how did it live so long and thrive in the UVa. anti-rape culture? Who knew it to be totally false and did nothing but riot or hold vigils?

        This should not be forgotten. People should get to the bottom of why it was not dealt with earlier, and how its was used to do all the damage it did to real students and organizations at the University. And ask what other stories are being invented, or otherwise ginned up to harm others, and how to make sure this sort of thing cannot happen again at UVA.

        I am simply amazed that anyone would want to forget about it. And pretend it didn’t happen in all its incredible details and consequences, so as to let this sort thing just keep going on, hanging more innocents.

      That’s a very interesting story as well. I’m interested to see if “Big Data” can improve educational outcomes for kids. Time will tell…..
