Introducing The Jefferson Council Website

by James A. Bacon

A fabulous new website (edited by yours truly), The Jefferson Council, tracks governance and culture-war issues at the University of Virginia. Much of the content is recycled from Bacon’s Rebellion, but we’re hoping that The Jefferson Council will grow into a vibrant stand-alone forum for the exchange of views about UVa’s future that generates loads of its own content. Here follow the three most recent posts…

Dear UVA Administrators and Board of Visitors

We write to you today as a large, rapidly expanding coalition of UVA stakeholders including parents, students, and alumni who are increasingly concerned about the current living/learning conditions at the University of Virginia. Continue reading “Show Us the Plan!”

Surprise — Zero Intellectual Diversity in Diversity Speaker Series!

The University of Virginia perpetuated the damaging stereotype of African- American society as an intellectual monoculture today with the release of speakers in its upcoming Racial Equity Speaker series. The three speakers represent a narrow range of black views on the issue of racism in America. Continue reading this post.

Will Historians One Day Contextualize the Contextualizers?

by Walter Smith

The Virginia Magazine newsletter recently featured this article on two newly formed commissions: one to articulate the university’s commitment to free expression and inquiry, the other to pursue recommendations of the Racial Equity Task Force regarding the renaming of buildings and memorials.

Regarding the first commission, the fact that an internationally respected institution founded by Thomas Jefferson, perhaps history’s greatest advocate for free speech, finds it necessary to study the issue is damning on its own terms. No further comment needed. Continue reading this post.

Yep I bet UVA is very interested in listening to white men…. hilarious.
Get over it UVA alum who are not down with the cause… it’s not your school anymore. Your annual giving check is all they want… not your presence or opinion.

Four white male faces on the leadership page….I think we’ve identified your problem. Didn’t want to list your class years and give away your ages? 😉

    1. We’re working on that.

      1. Your race or your ages?

Nothing can be done about the age…

          1. That is a funny movie. I was 12 or 13 years old when my family first got cable tv and Silver Streak was all over HBO at the time. I probably watched it a dozen times.

    Mr. Potato Head?

    1. Careful, there. You could end up “cancelled” if you don’t tone down the offensive language.

The correct term is “Potato Head”, just “Potato Head”.

In America, even a plastic Solanum tuberosum has the right to select its own gender identity…

Jim, Speaking as a UVA parent, I suggest this idea. Why don’t you fire Teresa Sullivan?

    1. Well played, sir.

Substantive take downs from the usual suspects, lowering the level of discourse.
So, at what age is one’s opinion automatically invalidated?
And are all non-cervix people’s opinions automatically invalid?
All people identifying as possessing Caucasity?
What if the Caucasity person has a cervix?
What if the opiner is 50.1% “black” and the remainder tainted by Caucasity? Does that opiner’s opinion count?
If the usual idiots who make their usual idiotic comments here are “white” or “old” or “male,” why do I have to give them any credence?
I would humbly suggest that advocacy for free speech is not exclusively “old,” “white,” or “male.”
