Map of the Day: Corporate Tax Rates

Source: The Tax Foundation

Why does Virginia have such an also-ran economy? Perhaps one reason, among many, is that its combined state and local corporate tax rate is higher than that of 24 other states. We’re not hostile to business like, say, Illinois or New Jersey, but we’re not welcoming either. — JAB

True. Plus the fact that our state has a number of entrenched laws that hold back the formation of real cities.

But, Don, JAB and others on this blog are dedicated to upholding the values of Thomas Jefferson. Among Jeffferson’s most cherised values was an agrarian economy. He considered cities as “pestilential to the morals, the health, and the liberties of man.”

And so they have been. But cities also have been the centers of innovation and material progress.

Take the good with the bad.

Jefferson may have gotten that right. He unquestionably had experience with Richmond and Philly and Paris.

If you owned Monticello and all the free labor to run it and meet your every want, need and desire (snicker), you might shun evil cities too.

          1. I do notown Monticello, or anything remotely resembling it; and I do not have free labor to to take care of my humble land holdings, or do anything else for me for that matter.

However, I do make it a point to eschew cities, and I find no reason to disagree with Mr. Jefferson regarding their attributes.

          2. Even with that he managed to run his properties and his wife’s family properties into bankruptcy.

Maybe he attributed his morals to the corrupting influence of the cities he experienced. Paris is where he got hooked up with Sally.

I only eschew cities when they’re filled with the sort of people that live in Northern Virginia.

  2. How do they figure the cost of local Virginia business taxes when figuring the tax load? BPOL is not either universal or uniform, nor are local business property taxes.

Yes they need to add in BPOL and Car Taxes to see the true comparison

We should tax the HELL out of them if just for this alone.

“Foone (a twitter alias) speculates that this device is “probably faster at number crunching and basic I/O than the CPU used in the original IBM PC.” IBM’s original PC was based on Intel’s 8088 microprocessor, an 8-bit chip that operated at 5Mhz. The difference here is that this is a pregnancy test you pee on and then throw away.”

    1. … you pee on [it] and then throw away.

Wasn’t that always the highest and best use of an Intel 8088 processor?

You could use one to guide a missile. A better finish

        1. You could also use a Hewlitt-Packard HP-41CX scientific calculator to guide a missile.
