It’s official.

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney (D) is running for governor of Virginia in what’s set to become a free-for-all primary.

Stoney has courted controversy in the past as former Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s chief strategist. Critics, including former Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (D), accuse the ambitious politician of being a hatchetman.

According to The Daily Wire, Fairfax – who was accused of sexual assault by multiple women in 2019 – claims that Stoney was behind the accusations.

CBS 6 Richmond continues:

“Stoney, 42, made his formal announcement in a video that highlighted his modest upbringing and the struggles he overcame to become the first in his family to graduate from high school and college. …

Despite some high-profile City Hall setbacks, including the failures of the Navy Hill development and two separate referendums that sought to bring a casino to the city, Stoney said Richmond has seen growth under his watch. He added personal and household income were up significantly, and poverty in Richmond has dropped 22 percent.

“If you look at the City of Richmond today compared to where it was a decade ago, you will see that the tax base in this city has expanded,” Stoney said in an interview with CBS 6 following his announcement. “It’s nearly doubled since the last 10 years. I’m very, very proud of that. And that means that we’ve been very diligent about bringing new employers in. You think about Costar’s bringing its 2,000 jobs to downtown.”

“Whether it was Navy Hill or the casino, and I have no regrets. Let me tell you why. Because I’m always going to be a champion for economic opportunities, always going to be a champion for job opportunities, always going to be a champion for educational opportunities,” he said.”

Stoney joins fellow Democrat Abigail Spanbeger in seeking the Democratic nomination for Governor in 2025.

Does anybody know how I can invest in NAH, LLC? If Stoney is elected I see the sky as they limit for NAH, LLC.

Forgot about that one. Stoney, Devon Henry, and Patrick Lindsey. All crooks. At least one went to jail.

If one is going to start speculating about an election in two years, will Miyares run for office. Or will anyone really running depend on who wins in 2024.

    1. There’s no speculation here. The man publicly announced he is running for governor.

I have to believe that Miyares or Winsome Sears is thinking about a run. It’s a bit of a ways off but what else are they going to do?

Kind of like Glenn Youngkin. Your term ends – now what?

Will they run if Trump is President and angering all of the moderate voters of Virginia. Would either of them want to run when voters are wanting to punish the Republicans for putting Trump back into the White House?

    Shrouded in controversy. Really?

Still, it’s known. Youngkin remains shrouded in mystery. What did he do between college basketball and governor?

Made a lot of money? Not on the government dime? Did he get any federal or State grift like McAwful?
(He (Youngkin), along with all of the PE types, did benefit from Obama’s zero interest rate policy…not that we are going to get run over by that train. But hey, all the retirees who got screwed over by that Obama policy to allow the massive spending and bail out his friends will now have some company. Marxism fails wherever tried.)

Stoney has never held a job outside of government. His original skill was being TMac’s body man, not that there is anything wrong with starting at the bottom. He has no major successes to point to as mayor. Spanberger is going to be their nominee and it won’t even be close. But Stoney is like the Richard Gere character in Officer and a Gentleman, he has nowhere else to go. This is not the best next move for him.

But does he want to run on her ticket and be
the guy to bring in the black votes?

Run for LG? Nobody openly runs for LG until they have to. 🙂 Spanberger needs no help gathering votes, or are you assuming black voters are racist?! 😉 Two years is a long, long time, but her voter appeal so far has been quite strong. Her first election I was working a precinct not in her district, and voter after voter was angry to find her not on the ballot. I worked a few years in a city precinct, and Stoney never got that kind of love.

I’d not be surprised that’s his play but I don’t think Spanburger could hold her nose.

    How about an alternate title?

I remember when Stoney was the not-highly-thought-of president of the JMU student body and I was running the hospital literally next door.

I have kept an eye on him over the years, and his only significant accomplishment has been finding the deep end of the political trough.
