DEI at UVA Astronomy: The Stars Are Not Aligned

by James A. Bacon

Back in 2020, the University of Virginia Astronomy Department jumped on the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) bandwagon. Ashamed of its history of attracting so few Blacks and Hispanics, the Department formed a DEI committee to advance the goal of making the department more demographically diverse.

The committee quickly resolved to hire an outside expert to conduct a climate survey and help write a strategic plan. The Department scraped together $3,000 of its own funds and applied to the College of Arts & Sciences for another $3,000 to pay for an outside consultant.

“The changes to the admissions process should result in more applications from underrepresented students and should result in more equitable admissions offers,” stated the Committee’s application. “Changes to the department climate should result in better retention of URM (Underrepresented minority) students, staff, and faculty.”

The Astronomy Department was a microcosm of the DEI fever that gripped UVA as a whole in 2020 in the aftermath of the George Floyd killing. The Astronomy Department’s earnest endeavors to advance racial justice were mirrored in dozens of other departments across the University.

The details described here, based on emails and documents the Jefferson Council obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, occurred four years ago, but they provide context for a climate survey underway at the College of Arts & Sciences. As documented by Bacon’s Rebellion and the Jefferson Council (“UVA Arts & Sciences to Conduct ‘Belonging’ Survey“), numerous departments have conducted climate surveys. To “ensure consistency and validity of survey instruments,” Arts & Sciences is undertaking a college-wide survey.

A broader issue for more selective state universities is the idea of firewalls that are separate standards for certain college, departments, and programs. Many "progressive" universities have diversity as part of their admissions and recruit plans but then have separate and much more stringent requirements to major in the hard sciences, engineering, or business. The same thing has always occurred in music, performing arts, visual arts but no one cared.

What many of these programs have to reconcile is how to maintain standards while increasing diversity (the black and brown kind).

So, I went to see my Doctor today and since he is a man of color, I wondered is he was one of these DEI guys! 😉 Or.. if he was one of those pesky immigrants taking our folks jobs… So , how, does one find out if their Doctor is a DEI guy first place? 😉 Inquiring minds and all that rot!
    😉

You die from an easily detected and curable disease? Well, that’s what the white guys say.

The last time I needed surgery on my leg, I sought out the best surgeon I could find who specialized in orthopedic foot and ankle surgery. When I found Dr. Perumal at UVA Sports Medicine it never even crossed my mind to question whether he was a "DEI guy" (as you put it). I think it's telling that you did think to wonder about your doctor…

DEI, the biggest LIE, is the core dogma of the woke democrat party, the inevitable implosion of which we are currently witnessing in real time. The democrat lie of DEI has now reached critical mass. As in Ka(mala)Boom!!!

DIE would have been a more truthful and accurate acronym as to the predictable end result of DEI.

How do you deal with the lies? You simply hold up the mirror of truth. As in the following. Enjoy!

You know the thing about DEI that is interesting is that the folks who make commercials for TV don't seem to have gotten the "cease and desist" memo.

Are poor single parent hillbillies part of diversity?

Do hillbillies do that kind of thing? 😉

All the ones I know are single because they weren't allowed to marry their sister.

Speaking of DEI, what happened to the DEI person who plagiarized her U Va Ed. School doctoral dissertation ? Anything?

U Va has a new Board of Visitors. Maybe they might visit the issue of academic integrity . . .

I know! They could require the minority students who test "proficient" in math and physics to major in physics or astronomy – whether they have any interest in those subjects or not…

If only there could be a DEI push for two parent households.
