Assaults on Law-Enforcement Officers Down Slightly in 2021

Although the number of police officers assaulted in the line of duty declined somewhat in 2021, two police officers were killed last year compared to one in 2020 and one in 2019, according to data published in the 2021 Crime in Virginia report issued by the Virginia State Police.

The number of “major injuries” fell slightly in 2021 compared to the previous two years.

2021 — 1,787 assaults
2020 — 1,973 assaults
2019 — 1,939 assaults

Forty-five officers suffered major injuries such as severe lacerations, broken bones, and internal injuries. That compared to 47 major injuries in 2020 and 39 in 2019.

Major injuries comprised only a small percentage of incidents in which law enforcement officers were killed or assaulted, however. The vast majority are classified as “no injury” or “apparent minor injury.” In the overwhelming majority of assaults, police were assaulted by “personal weapons” — hands, fists, feet, arms, or teeth. Only 39 involved firearms, and that number was down from 62 the previous year.

On the other hand, the number of assaults classified as “ambush – no warning” remained elevated — 14 last year compared to 15 and 7 the two previous years.

Meanwhile, down in Florida, a policeman was assaulted with a hot dog. It’s amazing to me what cops have to put up with ….

So, if police officers were not playing hot dog sales permit enforcement (really, is this what passes for keeping the peace these days) they would certainly have kept out of the line of fire…

      But, lol for this line…
      “…and threw the item–which is not a sandwich–at a uniformed patrolman.”

So…it is encouraging to see the absolute number down, but is the relative number down?
Did the number go down because police made less stops due to the current defund/police brutality false narrative?
I do wonder what is in it for the policemen given the instant bad media, the race hustlers, and the politicians who won’t defend them.
    And the poor people suffer…
How come if you obey the police at a stop nothing bad happens?
It’s not that hard… watch the Chris Rock video…or has that been pulled down?

“Did the number go down because police made less stops…”

      Let’s hope so…

As usual, Troll with no reply of any value. A guy really in need of the theocracy.
So Troll – do you “hope so” because people are committing less crimes and therefore there were fewer stops, or because you are one of the idiots who believes in defunding the police so that crimes did not go down and stops were down so poor people were victimized more?
You hate people of color and want them to suffer more from crime?

I hope so because armed cops who are licensed to kill in my name by the state should not be out making “stops”. Doing fewer clearly helps keep them from being assaulted so that is also a positive.

So you consume Dem propaganda or just paid to promote it?
Or a white supremacist? You know the increase in crime has mostly harmed “people of color,” right?

You know what a protection racket is don’t you. It is really a shame that the Conservative argument is that “people of color” must be “stopped” by cops as a cost of supposedly protecting them. Cops, meanwhile, are nowhere to be found when called about actual crimes. Today, if someone screams or there is gunfire in an urban neighborhood nobody calls the cops because they come too late… if they come at all. But god help you if you are doing 55 in a 54 with mirrored windows!!

You know…I avoid those 54 MPH zones because I know they are traps to get black people, and when I drive in those 54 MPH zones, I identify as black so I can resist a stop, speed away at 100 MPH, wreck, claim police brutality and get rich with my race-baiting Johnny Cochran Jackie Chiles style lawyer.
And thanks for supporting my arguments against gun control – another white Lib device to control black people (you know – the ones they didn’t abort through Margaret sanger and Planned Parenthood)

You do know that blacks actually don’t have 2A rights when it comes to things like “stops”. It has been demonstrated over and over that the Conservative consensus is that only the white male was considered when the FF drafted the 2nd. Your argument against gun control is only an argument supporting white male rights to bear arms.

You are truly ignorant of the origin of gun control laws? Like the desire of white libs to abort black babies?

You are deflecting as usual… bottom line is Conservatives firmly believe only white males have 2A rights and promote racial profiling by cops as the primary law enforcement methodology (but only in black neighborhoods, of course). Nearly every Conservative policy position is decided with a racial prism with one standard for whites and another for blacks.

Troll – keep digging. Clearly not what I believe, or blacks, so…are you denying the lived experience of a black man? Sounds like white privilege, white supremacy, white savior complex, all rolled into one!
And I used savior to remind you the theocracy is coming…

If you believe in the Conservative approach to law enforcement this is what you believe either wittingly or unwittingly. That is a fact of life in America.

As usual, wrong. You could try reading Heather McDonald’s writings, but you won’t because you’d have to see that you believe and are spouting lies. But I think you at least get paid for it as a Full Troll.

What is the evidence that it is “skyrocketing”?

      1. WayneS Avatar

Incidents do appear to be increasing on a nationwide basis:

Of course, “skyrocketing” is in the eye of the beholder…

I get that police are special and need to be protected from true threats on their lives but I disagree that a simple assault (hands as weapons) should be a felony when it is not for commoners (or in the reverse). Good to see they are down and hopefully due to simply fewer arrests meaning officers are not placing themselves in situations where they will be likely to be assaulted unless absolutely necessary. Safer for all involved.
