American Art and Culture Under Attack

by Kerry Dougherty

Francis Scott Key.

Ulysses S. Grant.

George Washington.

Thomas Jefferson.

Teddy Roosevelt.

Andrew Jackson.

Abolitionist Matthias Baldwin.

Juan Ponce de Leon.

St. Junipero Serra.

Lincoln Memorial.

World War I memorial.

World War II memorial.

Denver monument to the victims of Armenian genocide.

Boston’s Shaw Memorial to the 54th Regiment: The African-American Union soldiers depicted in the movie “Glory.”

This is just a partial list of statues and monuments that have been defaced, beheaded or toppled in the frenzy of unbridled anarchism that is sweeping the nation.

It has nothing to do with George Floyd. Or the Confederacy. Or even race.

These are mobs of barbarians – white and black – on a mission to destroy American culture, history and art work. With each day that passes, sunlight between these philistines and the Taliban disappears.

Where are the decent Democrats denouncing the destruction of public property? For the most part, they’re standing mutely by, refusing to join Republicans in condemning this vulgar attack on the country. Some in both parties are complicit, agreeing that statues must be unceremoniously removed from public view, without input from those who favor preservation.

Politics should be swept aside at a time like this and leaders of both parties should demand an end to the madness. We’re a country of laws. Or at least we used to be.

If statues or monuments are deemed offensive there’s a remedy: The disgruntled can make their case before city councils or state legislatures, asking that the works of art be moved.

But when midnight mobs armed with spray paint, sledge hammers and chains wantonly destroy property, they should be arrested.

So what’s next?

Earlier this month I predicted the Confederate monuments were just the beginning and The Founding Fathers were next. I was right. This is an all-out assault on American traditions and heroes.

I have to admit, I did not foresee the composer of our National Anthem being a target of raging social justice warriors. Or St. Junipero Serra, an 18th century Franciscan priest who was canonized in 2015 by woke Pope Francis.

Now the mob has turned its attention to Teddy Roosevelt and a bronze statue that stands outside the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It was defaced with red paint last week and Mayor Bill de Blasio proclaimed it to be “problematical.” Seems the man who in 1912 gave an hour-long speech while bleeding from a bullet wound after a Milwaukee assassination attempt and who doubled the national park system during his presidency, created 51 federal bird reserves, 150 national forests and 18 national monuments including the Grand Canyon will be removed from sight.

That’s a pity because Teddy Roosevelt was a towering figure and conservationist who singlehandedly protected millions of acres of wilderness. He was the quintessential American.

Next thing you know they’ll be gunning for Mt. Rushmore.

In the present climate, no revered figure is safe.

Including Jesus.

Get a load of this from Shaun King, a left-wing radical who was a surrogate for Bernie Sanders and a spokesman for Black Lives Matter. King has more than one million Twitter followers.

Yes.

All murals and stained glass windows of white Jesus, and his European mother, and their white friends should also come down.

They are a gross form white supremacy.

Created as tools of oppression.

Racist propaganda.

They should all come down.

The guillotine cannot be far behind…..

    1. .45 ACP trumps antiquated execution device requiring insurgents (generally without body armor) to seize and restrain their intended victims. Good luck with that.

Ah, the national razor… Trumps Hanlon’s and Occam’s every time. Cuts right through the meat of the problem.

  2. You are WRONG! Anarchists implies that there is no planning…. This is a well thought out, planned, implemented, and financed assault on our country, heritage, government, and way of life.

The next big target is Gettysburg Battlefield on July 4th.

Well, I was badly wrong. It’s way more than just Jim Crow statues and I cannot and will not try to defend it. Things are headed south in a really bad way.

Unfortunately, it’s not something that can be easily stopped unless we are going to post guards around all of them. And keep in mind even though we are seeing dozens of statues being defaced, there are – thousands that would have to be guarded!

We’re taking on some characteristics of 3rd world countries sorry to say.

Some of these, I suspect are the Bernie folks.

I normally don’t bother to read this writer’s work, but I did this one.

Anarchists are currently having their moment – the pandemic and economic collapse on top of the Floyd murder and BLM breakthrough all provide cover for acting out without consequence.

It is just another norm (laws against destruction of property) that is toppling – given the onslaught against all norms that are also underway and have been in full force for at least 5 years.

Of course one does not condone this, but here is the challenge – addressing the larger questions of this destruction, what it represents, and what to do about it?

From my perspective, add this too the very long list of things to be outraged about – but its near the bottom, not the top.

While a toppled statue is exciting news, and the damage to public property is readily apparent, on a dollar for dollar basis, does it cost anymore than a bunch of lawless cattlemen running their herds on public land and wantonly killing wildlife?

When they run out of monuments to destroy, will they turn their attention to infrastructure?

    1. If so, I would suggest the Governor’s Mansion and the AG’s Office as starting points.

        Spoken like an anarchist.

        1. In truth, I would prefer they started with your house/tent/refrigerator box but that is antithetical to my beliefs regarding private property and would start us down a slippery slope when they ran out of “Karens’” houses to torch.

And remember the knee jerk reactions by lots of corporations to blindly give 10s if not 100s of millions to some of the groups who will undoubtedly use these new war chests to fund campaigns of like-minded allied candidates. The tear it down and defund movement will be with us for quite a while. And unfortunately it will continue to gain momentun until something tragic happens. And even more unfortunately that tragedy will probably impact those less fortunate.
Just remember that when you buy their products or services… you’re paying for it.

I would not get too carried away. These folks doing this are close kin to the vandals and rioters and not the far larger movement protestors who will reject a lot of this.

As bad as this is, and it is, the potential for much worse in present.

I wouldn’t worry as much about infrastructure as I would private property which could go up in flames like we saw in the 1960’s race riots.

” What was one of the causes of the race riots that occurred in the United States during the late 1960s?

The deeper causes of the riot were high levels of frustration, resentment, and anger that had been created among African Americans by unemployment and underemployment, persistent and extreme poverty, racism and racial segregation, police brutality, and lack of economic and educational opportunities.”

    https://www.encyclopedia.com/history/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/race-riots-1960s

this keeps happening… and after a few years, we forget about then it comes back again.

Sean King is hardly an outsider. Neither is Ilhan Omar, Minneapolis City Council, or AOC. My point is the money will only be used to support candidates who will follow all the principles of the groups that have received vast donations. Try reading exactly what they say on their own websites and Twitter feeds. No one needs to interpret, they are very foward in their missions. And it’s not about statues, their missions are complete rewrites of western governance.

A lot of slaveholders, and slavery or Jim Crow statues, a few conquistadors and a bloodthirsty priest or too. Bad rubbish.

Those worthy of repair and replacement will be fixed.

  9. Elizabeth Rogliani, a young Venezuelan woman, has described where the destruction of statues leads. From PJ Media:

She points to several steps Venezuela went through on its way from being one of the most prosperous countries in the Americas to a socialist police state and economic disaster:

    2. Statues came down because socialist dictator Hugo Chavez wanted the history erased.
    2. He changed street names for the same reason.
    3. He changed the educational curriculum to erase history and substitute his version.
    4. Some movies were banned, presumably for the same reason.

We’ve seen all of these happen in America just in the past few weeks, with statue destruction happening in blue cities and states from coast to coast, as city leaders choose not to defend them.

    1. LarrytheG Avatar
      LarrytheG

PJ Media has some issues which affect it’s credibility as a news source:

“In August 2018, PJ Media published an article by then supervising editor Paula Bolyard[19] claiming that Google was manipulating its algorithm to prioritize left-leaning news outlets in their coverage of President Trump.[20] Bolyard acknowledged that her study was “not scientific,” though she did conclude that “the results suggest a pattern of bias against right-leaning content.” Fact checkers at PolitiFact rated this claim false[21]

In January 2019, PJ Media published a column by their senior editor Tyler O’Neil[22], in which he insinuated in his article that a Muslim community patrol in New York City might be enforcing Sharia Law and might be linked to the NYPD[23], a conspiracy theory also being pushed by other media of Far-right politics[24]. This group, the Muslim Community Patrol Service (MCPS)[25] was a certified volunteer Neighborhood watch in Brooklyn, a NYC CERT[26] along with other community patrols such as the Brooklyn Asian Safety Patrol[27] and the Guardian Angels. PJ Media offered nothing that demonstrated the MCPS could, or planned to, “enforce Sharia law,” beyond engaging in the speculative hypothetical that the MCPS might somehow “apply … Sharia in its community monitoring.” Fact-checkers at Snopes rated this claim false.[28]

In January 2020, PJ Media published a column by one of their writers[29] Robert B. Spencer also founder and director of the anti-Muslim conspiracy blog Jihad Watch, in which he stated that congresswoman Ilhan Omar had given Iran military advice by suggesting it could target Trump hotels, and thus committed treason.[30] Fact-checkers at Snopes rated this claim false.[31]

In February 2020, PJ Media published a column by one of their writers [32] Victoria Taft also a conservative talk show host,[33] in which she stated that President Barack Obama waited until millions were infected and 1000 dead in the U.S. before he declared the Pandemic H1N1/09 virus an emergency.[34] Fact-checkers at Snopes rated this claim false.[35]

      1. Wow, you cite four cases. Compare that to the multiple lies of commission and omission told by the Washington Post on a daily basis.

Don’t forget Fred Hiatt, head of the Post’s editorial board for years, permitted a violation of company policy by permitting members of the board to pressure reporters on not reporting negative information about then-Governor Tim Kaine.

        2. LarrytheG Avatar
          LarrytheG

yep, roger that, but there are other media like WSJ that do not promote conspiracy theories and if they make an error, they own up to it – unlike PJMEDIA which just blows this stuff out and never goes back to admit they were wrong.

And you KNOW IT yet you persist in referencing them like they are a legitimate news source!

Here’s what a reputable news organization does when it screws up:

” The Tennessean and its parent company Gannett announced on Monday that an advertising manager was fired after the news organization published an anti-Muslim advertisement.

The full-page Sunday ad, purchased by an Arkansas-based organization centered on end-of-world preaching, used religious language to predict an impending nuclear attack in Nashville by “Islam.”

          https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/2020/06/22/tennessean-fires-manager-donates-funds-plans-training-after-anti-muslim-ad-runs/3234806001/

          PJMEDIA? not so much…

This is a pattern with many right-leaning media these days – even FOX news.. it’s like “normal”.

Oh she is – but what exactly is her background with respect to assessing socialism and it’s effect on government and society?

I could run down the list of atrocities against human beings most of the names on that list committed. I could point out the mysterious spate of Black hangings in public places being labeled as suicides or Bubba Wallace finding a noose in his garage.

But the simple fact is this: if the white majority had simply listened earlier when their Black countrymen asked them to vote in constraints on police use of force, none of this would be happening. If George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and Tamir Rice and Ayanna Stanley and John Crawford and Atatiana Jefferson were not dead, stripped from the people who love them extrajudicially the statues would be fine.

But the white majority decided it was fine with qualified immunity and no knock warrants and no civilian oversight for police and 1,000 American citizens being killed by cops every year. It was fine with people dieing and no one going to prison (except Mohammed Noor).

The majority had the opportunity to forestall this via democracy. They decided they had other priorities.

And so now these grievances against living, breathing human beings are being redressed against inanimate objects. Pieces of rock and metal, the price being paid for flesh and blood.

I’d like to think the white majority will respond wisely and on the side of humanity this time. But they didn’t after Nat Turner and John Brown. They didn’t after Watts and Newark and LA.

So the only hope I have is that next time there are still statues for people to focus their anger on.

Corporations choose to support and fund a large number of groups and causes as is their right. Thus, it is pretty hard to determine which one you are paying for as you buy their products. As “Citizens United” was decided by SCOTUS corporations have the right to free speech even as expressed through their political donations.

I drove from Warrenton to Rochester NY today to sell off my immense vinyl record collection. Scored 5 grand. Between Greencastle PA (MD/PA border) and Lawrenceville PA (PA/NY border) I counted 56 rebel battle flags on flag poles and front stoops. I never dreamed that the Yankees would join the rebellion 155 years after Appomattox.

Appalachia had a detrimental effect on the generations.

The “approved history” of the Confederate Battle Flag is that the designer deliberately avoided Christian references, “tipping the cross”, but a plain and simple fact was that from the Fall Line west in the Southern states, the population was hugely Scots-Irish. The attempt to appeal to them by designing the flag using St. Andrews Cross is no accident.

The “Stars and Bars” is not this flag. It is the official state flag of 13 circled stars and 3 stripes, flown on most CSS ships.

My namesake (pictured) spent 2 years at Johnson’s Island Prison. He wrote about how the rats roasted up to be as good as a squirrel. Lived until 1919. I knew some old timers in Chatham, Virginia who remember the stories told by Whitehead to them as children. Great stories too like the charge at Malvern’s Hill or Pickett’s Charge or the Shakespeare plays they would perform in prison to amuse everyone including their guards.
