If you’re heartsick at how your alma mater is turning into an incubator of intolerance and hate, you are not powerless. You can organize and push back just as the alumni of The University of Virginia, Washington & Lee University, the Virginia Military Institute, and James Madison University are doing. This eight-minute video produced by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) — in which yours truly plays a brief role — describes the rise of the alumni movement across the United States.

Local alumni groups have banded together in the Alumni Free Speech Alliance to share tactics and strategies. AFSA provides resources, checklists, and mentors to help you launch an alumni group at your alma mater. No need to reinvent the wheel.

You can ignore the culture wars, but the culture wars won’t ignore you. The social justice warriors in our institutions of higher education have declared their intention to fundamentally transform every institution in our society. You can sit by, do nothing, and find American society unrecognizable 20 years from now, or you can get off your butt. Visit the AFSA website now. — JAB

When it’s one from column A or one from column B, you’ll “hold your nose”.

Column C until we get a 3rd party with some sense. The Repubs and Dems are both disgusting. No one with any self respect could vote for Clinton, Trump or Biden.

All 3rd Parties, who can never raise enough money to win, do is divert GOP votes and hand elections to Democrats.

No! We want to vote for more crime, inflation, taxes, debt, indoctrinations, Fentanyl deaths and millions of new taxpayer dependents from Biden’s no borders.

    Fixed it…

Virginia is doing well, having 4 of the 16 members nationwide.

Soon alternate alumni groups will be standing up in opposition to what they see as this new threat to their beloved institutions.

DO YOU MEAN FOR OR AGAINST FREE SPEECH?

Hard to say as some may review these new groups as an attempt at conservative indoctrination.

re: ” If you’re heartsick at how your alma mater is turning into an incubator of intolerance and hate, ”

This is pure opinion… JAB’s “free speech” but it’s simply not the truth as most folks know and see it.

For as long as I can remember, prospective speakers have been heckled and shouted down at many Colleges.

    It’s not a new thing.

It’s not something to be proud of, I admit but in terms of characterizing it as “intolerance and hate”, that’s purely opinion of some, not all by a long shot.

In the end, people who are opposed to a speaker also have an equal right to speak , they are not required to keep quiet and listen.

What exactly should a University president do if a speaker is heckled or shouted down?

Do what? arrest the students and put them on probation or some such? Give them demerits? expel them? What should be done with them?

Just post the names and pics so in ten years they are still looking for jobs….Only an idiot HR director is letting fascist disruptors onto the payroll.

Invoking the Nazi’s when talking about the right to assemble and protest. OMG

Another person who forgets the Nazi’s were….wait for it…socialists! A worker’s party! Fascism is not an ideology, but a set of tactics, and the Left has the tactics down.

The Nazi’s were evil and more like communists. Trump populists are the “new” self-proclaimed worker’s party. This set of tactics has been mastered by both sides.

Communism is a subset of socialism, it’s scary when people try to discuss things they aren’t qualified. Almost as scary when they feign a “joke” for distributing statements they’ve made.

PS: FDR was a populist and a “workers party” kinda guy, but don’t let history get in your way or trying to manipulate facts.

post the names of the hecklers on the college website?

        that’s funny!

They should be removed from the event so that those who came to listen (and learn from) the speaker can do so. The punishment should be determined based on the rules of the University and the seriousness of the violation. In any case, punishments and consequences should be even-handed and not based on the biases of the administration.
“In the end, people who are opposed to a speaker also have an equal right to speak , they are not required to keep quiet and listen.” Those who wish to voice an alternative opinion have the options of passing out flyers or organizing their own event.

What is happening in higher education is nothing new. Every alumni generation laments that the generation coming after them is ruining the institution. I am sure that my father thought my generation (the baby boomers) were making William and Mary and society “unrecognizable” 20 years after he graduated.
