A Brief Respite from Reality

In a break from our regularly scheduled programming about COVID-19, racism and riots, here’s a plug for Virginia’s state parks.

My wife and I enjoyed a getaway today at Powhatan State Park. The park has loads of well-maintained trails, suitable for walking, hiking, biking and horseback riding, that take you through meadows and forest and the banks of the James River. The skies were blue, the temperature balmy, and the butterflies were having a field day.

We were astonished to see so many horseback riders.

There are ramps for putting canoes and kayaks into the James. But after heavy rains a few days ago, the river was high, the current was fast, and we didn’t see anyone braving the water.

I hiked the Chinn Ridge loop trail with my father at Manassas Battlefield six weeks ago. Witnessed 2 men exchanging cash for weapons at the 5th New York Zouaves Monument. We quickly back tracked and found another way out. Attempted to report this to Park Police. No answer no pick up. Attempted to report to Prince William County police. They referred me to the Park Police. Message of the story. You are not safe anywhere including a park.

Good for you! It’s reall not that hard to find less crowded places to walk but many of us actually like to see other people around!

Horses and humans are not compatible on the trails in the east unless they are mountain trails. Horses turn the trails in wet/damp places into mud bogs – so when a trail head shows that horse are allowed, pick a different trail!

I took my late German Shepherd there many times. I have another dog now and should take her there, too.
