WaPo Stokes Fear Campaign against Feral Hogs

The Washington Post is ramping up its hate campaign against wild pigs. Labeling the highly intelligent, highly social animals as an “invasive species,” the newspaper describes them as “marauding” across the southern United States,  “eviscerating crops, gobbling up sea turtles, and tramping archaeological sites in a rampage showing no signs of letting up.”

The newspaper invokes their Hispanic origins — “brought to North America from Europe by Spanish conquistadors” — and makes an issue of their high fertility rate: “They produce large litters.” Invoking harmful and negative stereotypes, the newspaper quotes an Arkansas Game & Fish Commissioner spokesman as saying that the animals leave a “trail of diseases and parasites.” And without citing any evidence that wild pigs have attacked humans, it warns, “Their razor sharp tusks combined with their lightning speed can cause serious injury.”

Describing feral hogs as a pest to be exterminated, WaPo writes approvingly of the use of camera-enabled traps, night hunts using infrared scopes, and “helicopter squads rifle-toting sportsmen.” It quotes a Texas wildlife official as suggesting that an AR-15-type firerarm may not pack enough punch to pierce the pig’s tough hide. “The best caliber rifles should be a .243 of greater to prevent wounding and loss of the animal.”

Bacon’s bottom line: Wild pigs are wily, tough, and adaptable. Sure, they may out-compete native American species that don’t want to put in much effort in the daily struggle for survival, but they bring diversity to U.S. ecosystems. With their strong pack cohesion, they show stronger “family values” than most Americans. Terrified of the demographic revolution in the animal world, the Washington Post is displaying an ugly fear of change.

Update: The Virginia Mercury has the Virginia angle on the hog debate. This article contends that people (identities unknown) might have imported hogs into the state and released them into the wild to be hunted.

    Oh it gets FAR WORSE!

Feral Cats Kill Billions of Small Critters Each Year
A new study shows that cats—especially feral ones—kill far more birds and small mammals than scientists previously thought.

here are so many ways for a little bird or squirrel to die these days–they can be squished by cars, splattered into buildings, run over by bulldozers, poisoned or even shot. But if you have ever had to clean up a mangled “present” left on your doorstep by a kitty, you’ll know that little creatures can also be killed by pets.

Cats in particular have earned a nasty reputation for themselves as blood thirsty killers of wildlife. They have been named among the top 100 worst invasive species (PDF) in the world. Cats have also earned credit for countless island extinctions. Arriving onto the virgin specks of land alongside sailors, the naive native fauna didn’t stand a chance against these clever, efficient killers. All said, cats claim 14 percent of modern bird, amphibian and mammal island extinctions. But what about the mainland?

This makes me so angry at Donald Trump and his family. The scourge of feral pigs is Trump’s fault. As all well informed leftists know, Trump’s family has been on safari hunting and killing triceratops, saber tooth tigers and wooly mammoths. Doesn’t Trump understand that these apex predators are exactly what keeps Virginia’s wild boar population in check? I mean what the hell is going to kill and eat a wold boar, a labradoodle? No, a saber tooth tiger.

This is a pretty good list of rifles and shotguns for hunting feral hogs …

Remember to keep that Glock on your hip just in case one of those stealthy ninja hogs tries to sneak up on you! Actually, my uncle and I always carried sidearms when hunting coyotes.

    1. Texas has found a better way: slowly bleed them to death! Or so the WaPo claims (you never know about the MSM). https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/animalia/wp/2017/02/23/hog-apocalypse-texas-has-a-new-weapon-in-its-war-on-feral-pigs-its-not-pretty/?noredirect=on

With no link to the story perhaps Jim made all this up….fake news on BR? Clearly with global warming these critters will be up to Alaska by next year.

We know the WaPo don’t like nothing about the old south, particularly the good old boys there and their favorite things – wild hogs, and hound dogs and coons.

So now the WaPo is on a rampage like Sherman’s march through Georgia killing off pigs. But this go round the WaPo wages war under the excuse of exterminating “invasive species marauding across the southern United States eviscerating crops, gobbling up sea turtles, and tramping archaeological sites in a rampage showing no signs of letting up.”

Truth is the WaPo’s target here ain’t Wild Pig, its another critter WaPo calls an invasive species – good old southern boys and living things they love.

The Powerline Blog regularly finds significant problems with the reporting of the Post. E.g., https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2019/08/more-fake-news-from-the-trump-resisting-washington-post.php

Yep, for the WaPo it’s all about the The Arkansas Razorbacks football program representing the University of Arkansas, located in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in the sport of American football, and much else besides.

    If you really want to understand the Washington Post, and how they think, and what they see their mission to be, then you best read in detail and depth the WaPO coverage of;

1/ the 1991 Clarence Thomas Hearings,
2/ the 2006 Duke Lacrosse Case,
3/ the 2012 Trayvon Martin Case,
4/ the 2014 Ferguson, Missouri, Michael Brown / Darren Wilson Case
4/ the 2018 brett Kavanaugh Supreme court hearings, and
6/ the 2019 WoPo’s smear of the Covington Catholic High School students wearing MAGA hats in front of Capital in Wash. DC.

In my opinion, the WaPo grossly misrepresented facts of all these events, and in practical affect smeared innocent people in all these stories on the basis of their identity, beliefs and/or skin color.

So I use all these case as background context for most everything I read and judge in the WaPo.

    Occasionally, I am pleasantly surprised.

For example, a very good WaPo reporter occasionally will break a story by telling the truth like happened in the UVA Jackie affair. But majority of WaPo stories are told through the same old bias to sell the same old hidden or not so hidden agenda.

What is particularly disgusting about all these cases of smear and misinformation is that these stories were highly orchestrated with outside allies over substantial periods of time for a highly defined political advantage. These were not honest mistakes, but intentional malfeasance, driven by calculating editors. In some cases, I so informed the Washington Post in writing at the time is some detail.

The WaPo bit made some distasteful comparisons and is clearly under researched. I can’t any evidence that unprovoked pigs are generally dangerous to people. It also ignores the biggest problem with feral pigs, in my opinion. They cause disease. According to people smarter than me, hogs spread viruses, parasites, and bacteria to wildlife and to livestock (Meredian et, al, 2018; Comeaux et al., 2018,Pedersen, K, et al. , 2014). Some of the little nasties cause fatal issues.

I happen to have some experience raising/ showing animals, and am genuinely concerned about feral pigs harming livestock, and ultimately contributing to drug resistance. For anyone who is interested, parasites can quickly species-hop via waste, fleas, and rodents. Parasites can be lethal to young or already-sick livestock, and are a royal pain to manage in communal settings (like farms). We can’t blame all parasites on hogs. But we know hogs are 1) prolific, 2) carry lots of parasites 3) are abundant due to a lack of predators 4) bust through fences, except for expensive hog fences that also block wildlife, and 5) poop out parasites. When those parasites enter food animals, farmers incur economic losses, and must use more pesticides and antibiotics. We are not talking a few wild pigs, we are talking about a million plus hogs that our ecosystem has not yet evolved to check. Also, my dad says they can ruin a golf course.

Until we have a new generation of drugs, I favor abatement/ control. Ideally we will develop a sterilization strategy so we can avoid killing (clearly intelligent) animals.

Sorry to drift from the general inappropriateness of the WaPo article. I agree that the article stinks.

    1. Policy Student, don’t take my post too seriously. Like other members of the Bacon family, I have an affinity for feral pigs that transcend rational analysis. Bottom line: On this particular issue, I cannot be reasoned with.
