Existing Gun Laws Get Some Help from a Perp

This guy was better armed than the average citizen or cop. But just with a weapon. It did not seem to help him. Darwin was right.

From a DOJ news release:

Virginia Beach Man Pleads Guilty to Possessing a Machine Gun Used in a Shootout

NORFOLK, Va. – A Virginia Beach man pleaded guilty last week to illegal possession of a machine gun.

According to court documents, Shy’Quan Dodson, 25, possessed a machine gun on July 18, 2021. That day, Norfolk Police (NPD) officers were in the vicinity of the 900 block of Tunstall Avenue in Norfolk, where they observed multiple individuals shooting at each other. The individuals fled in three separate vehicles, and during the ensuing pursuit a firearm was tossed from the rear of the vehicle. After a 15-minute pursuit that ended in a crash in Portsmouth, Dodson was detained while attempting to flee on foot from the vehicle. The firearm tossed from the vehicle was a Glock with an attached component that converted the handgun into a fully automatic machine gun.

A search of Dodson’s cell phone showed photos of him holding the weapon, and a primer residue test revealed that Dodson had primer particles on his hands from the discharge of a firearm. Dodson’s phone also contained communications with another individual related to the buying and selling of machine gun conversion kits.

Dodson is scheduled to be sentenced on August 12. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

You have to be happy that the defendant:

  • apparently hit no one he was shooting at with his automatic weapon;
  • tossed the Glock with the attached full automatic component (see image) from the car with the police in pursuit;
  • wrecked his car;
  • attempted to flee on foot;
  • saved the conversation about buying the auto-fire modification component; and
  • kept cell phone pictures of him holding the weapon.

He pleaded guilty. Good attorney. The court system needs more defendants like that.

In New York, he would have been released on his own recognizance until federal charges were filed. In his case, I suspect that he quickly could have been grabbed up again.

        I call them clips. In fact I have never heard them called magazines, but then I do not get out much. Is it a Glock thing or for all automatics?

        1. A magazine is a ‘box like’ storage & feeding unit which holds rounds for semi-autos and autos. ‘Clips’ are just what it sounds like – it clips the rounds together – no side walls.

          Glock is not an automatic, except the G18 [I think] which is a 9mm fully auto pistol. It was developed for Middle East royal family security personnel [according to my tour host] …. where ‘collateral damage’ is not an issue. IT IS A PAIN TO KEEP ON TARGET [got to fire one at the Glock factory in Austria].

            In my world semi-automatic pistols have always been called automatics, to distinguish them from revolvers. The Luger and 1911 Colt military were automatics. But I got my first pistol in 1954.

          ALL magazines are magazines, they are never ever called clips among any hunters, AR15 owners, handgun owners or any one else who actually has been taught, trained, and is still training with their weapons. Mags for short, but you don’t have a clip release, you have a mag release.

    What is the basis for your statement that in New York he would have been released on is recognizance. That state has tougher gun laws than Virginia, one of which is the subject of a case currently before the Supreme Court, which will likely rule against the state.

    At some point, we have to stop this madness and ban the manufacture, sale, and possession of handguns and semi-automatic rifles.

            Yes, and the Constitution does not mention marriage or abortion or one person, one vote or infrastructure and a zillion other things we enjoy. But roads are built for autos and commerce while the Fifth amendment protects private property (homes) through eminent domain. Very inconvenient facts.

            “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

            Insisting on insurance for guns and ammo infringes on the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

            There is no such language about marriage, one man one vote, etc.

            Therefore, there is nothing in the Constitution prohibiting the state from making laws about marriage, voting, etc.

            Liberals know they don’t have the votes to amend the Constitution so they scheme up ways to amend it without going through the amendment process.

      The modification of the firearm was illegal, did it stop the individual from doing it? No, owning a select fire weapon is a hearty tax stamp and FBI background check, that’s if you can find one manufactured before 1986 and can afford the price tag.

      So again, you’re not going to stop a criminal from acquiring a firearm since they have zero respect for the law. It’s this type of thinking that illustrates people who shouldn’t be in Government, ever.

            Stats are nice but do not prove your criticism. Illegal firearm possession is a long distance from the commission of a crime using the weapon. How many do you assert were released without bail for firing the weapon or using it in a theft or menacing another? What would bail achieve for possession of a $500 weapon delivered from Virginia? Two citations to Lame Stream Media on a conservative blog to justify a faulty initial observation is heretical.

          2. vicnicholls Avatar
            vicnicholls

            $500? Glocks cost more than that unless used. One modified like this would be more expensive. I’d suspect it was probably a 19 or 17, both of which keep their value as the 19 is the most popular gun, the 17 is in the top 10. 43x is a single line, requiring a $40 mag to convert to 16 rounds. That’s the top 3 Glocks.

    This is well known. Modify the backplate off a Glock and it turns into an automatic pistol vice the normal semi automatic. You can attach a drum to an AR15 style rifle but unless you modify it, it is still semi automatic. An Uzi has a switch, it can also be automatic not a machine gun. If you practice and are taught by someone who knows what they’re doing, you can shoot as quickly and accurately that is not much off a machine gun. You can get extended mags that will hold as much if not more than a AR15 (including the 9mm AR15). Whooptie doo, this is nothing out of the ordinary. Not news.

            Don’t worry. The Supreme Court is likely to soon overturn New York’s law on concealed carry. Therefore, it will be much easier to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Perhaps, the Court will even rule that the state cannot even require one to get a permit. So, police will not be able to arrest and charge people for having an “illegal” gun. Then, these statistics about people being arrested for violating gun laws and being released will go way own.
