Institutions
of higher education aren't just good for the local
economy, they contribute to the U.S. balance of
trade, according to figures recently published by
the National Association of International
Educators. Foreign students and their families
spent nearly $12 billion on tuition and living
expenses in the U.S. last school year.
In
Virginia, 12,600 foreigners attended schools in
the Old Dominion, generating $136 million in
tuition payments and $196 million in living
expenses, offset by $87 million in financial
support.
Not
surprisingly, larger institutions tended to host
the most foreign students: Northern Virginia
Community College (2,267), Virginia Tech (2,087),
University of Virginia (1,900), George Mason
University (1,888) and Old Dominion University
(1,366). But even some small, private colleges
opened up their doors: Marymount (353) and Liberty
(273).
