I couldn't agree more with Mr. Palatiello's points.
If the nation is to receive any benefit from a "stimulus" package beyond the tax cuts (credits are more likely) that go directly to individuals and businesses, then the spending must be for the creation of private sector jobs. Only then will there be any hope of longer-term growth as the companies that hire these new employees begin to succeed and expand in communities across the country.
We in the design and construction community have long contended that dollars wisely spend on true infrastructure projects not only create valuable jobs in the short term but also add to the long term economic viability and competitiveness of US businesses (both domestically and abroad).
What we have also faced over the years are arbitrary and counter productive attempts by government unions to pad their numbers by mandating that work be done "in house" by government employees rather than contracting for the needed services.
The ingenius ingredient of the U.S. economy, which is the envy of the world, is our entrepreneural spirit, risk taking, and reward system -- i.e. elements of a free market system. Any stimulus package that is directed at supporting these principles and expanding their capacity, is a stimulus package that might just have a chance of succeeding.
